SpeedSource RX-7 Wins ARRC with Rob Huffmaster at Wheel, Ray Huffmaster Scores ITU Win in RX-8

SpeedSource Race Engineering has long had a strong tradition at the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC). The annual event brings together the top racers in regional based SCCA classes with a championship race at the world class Road Atlanta facility. Team owner Sylvain Tremblay and chief engineer David Haskell have both scored wins in one of the ARRC's most hotly contested classes, the ITS division. This time around it was Ray and Rob Huffmaster that scored victories in Mazda powered SpeedSource machines.

Rob Huffmaster arrived at the 2006 edition of the ARRC with unfinished rookie business. In 2005 the young talent took to the track in the ITS division with a second place result. This year Rob faced stiff competition in the ITS class, but started off the weekend strong by putting his SpeedSource built Mazda RX-7 on the pole position by over a second. From the pole position Rob held off stiff competition all day long to score his first ARRC victory.

"This is the same Mazda RX-7 that SpeedSource built me back in 2000," commented Rob's proud father, Ray. "It is a testament to SpeedSource that this car came here six years later, performed flawlessly, and captured the victory."

Not to be outdone by his son, Ray also scored a victory in the ITU class driving a SpeedSource built Mazda RX-8. Ray started the race from pole position and drove the RX-8 to a commanding victory.

With victories in both sprint races, the Huffmaster family now had the endurance event on Sunday to prepare for. The enduro event would see Rob and Ray share the track at the same time. Qualifying saw the two qualify second and third overall, split by less than a second. The race saw both drivers score strong finishes. Ray took home second overall and the ITU class victory. Rob scored sixth overall and second in class. Had it not been for the unlucky timing of a yellow flag, Rob may have also won his class.

"Not only did the SpeedSource built Mazda RX-7 run great all weekend, but the RX-8 also ran great as well," added Ray Huffmaster. "There is some really stiff competition at the ARRC and SpeedSource has proven that their engineering and car preparation is excellent."

For SpeedSource it marks their fourth win in the hotly contested ITS class at the ARRC.

"We are very pleased with the performance by the Huffmaster family at the ARRC," commented Tremblay. "Rob is very talented young driver and his performance both at the ARRC and in the Grand Am Cup series has proven that he is a rising star in the sportscar racing world."
