Paul Gentilozzi set fastest time in the morning SCCA Trans-Am practice session on the streets of Houston, Texas, with a time of 1:13.412 for an average speed of 74.881 mph. Second fastest to Gentillozzi's Jaguar was Brian Simo in his Qvale Mangusta at 1:13.588. Third quickest was Gentilozzi's Jaguar teammate Johnny Miller at 1:13.607.
The afternoon's qualifying session was postponed until 8:30 Saturday morning because of persistent rain on the course. A second practice session was held instead, but most teams held their cars out of the session. Randy Ruhlman had the fastest second session time at 1:19.937 and 68.769 mph in his Chevrolet Corvette.
The rains in Houston are expected to end overnight, leaving Saturday's qualifying session and race to be run in the dry. Therefore, even though BFGoodrich has a new and improved rain tire available, most teams decided not to risk their cars in the slick conditions.
