Hunt Racing Hires Rod Scharf

1998 was a break through year for Hunt Racing, owned by Thomas Hunt of Buffalo, NY. The signing of Keith Scharf and his podium finish at Homestead were solid evidence that the Hunt team will be front runners in the 1999 Pro Spec Racer Series.

Searching for a driver to be Keith's teammate for 1999 was an effortless task. At Keith's recommendation, Hunt hired Rod Scharf of Greenwood, IN, former Spec Racer pilot currently lead instructor at Track Attack driving school in Indianapolis. "After interviewing Rod, it was clear that there is no better driver available to be Keith's teammate," agreed Hunt. "Since Rod Scharf is Keith's nephew, Rod and Keith have raced together since childhood. They have developed a level of teamwork unparalleled in our sport. Their ability to work together will give Hunt Racing a significant advantage over our competitors." Rod Scharf began racing BMX bicycles at age 9 in his childhood hometown of Chesterfield, Missouri. His aggressive style gained him support from several St. Louis area bicycle shops. His success in racing continued when he stepped up to Karts at the age of 18. Beginning with 100cc Sprint Karts on high bank dirt tracks, he progressed to 100cc Super Stock Karts competing on various temporary street circuits throughout the Midwest.

After taking time off to complete his Bachelors Degree, Rod returned to racing and graduated from the Fast Track Racing School at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 1994 he joined "Team Duke" where he got his taste for driving Spec Racers competing in the Midwest and Central Division Nationals. In 1998, Rod became the Lead Instructor/Road Racing Specialist for Track Attack Racing School in Indianapolis. There he provides instruction in Spec Racer, Formula Mazda, Formula Continental and Late Model Super Trucks. Rod's racing accomplishments include being identified in 1995 by Sportscar as a dark horse to win the Valvoline Runoffs in Spec Racer. He was also voted the Most Improved Driver in the St. Louis Region SCCA. In 1994, Rod set the lap record for Spec Racer at Gateway International Raceway.
