Lamb on Top in MX-5 Cup Practice at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 14, 2009) -- Continuing his run of successful SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup weekends, Todd Lamb, of Atlanta, Ga., was quickest in Friday practice at Road America, site of the Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase. Stan Wilson, of Mt. Juliet Tenn., and Jeff Mosing, of Austin, Texas, were second and third fastest, respectively, before Round Seven qualifying on Saturday.

Coming off of his recording-breaking fifth-straight MX-5 Cup win, three weeks ago at Autobahn Country Club, Lamb led Round Seven practice with a 2:39.680 (91.262 mph). Driving the No. 84 AMG Racing/Traqmate/Luna-C Racing MX-5, Lamb led both the first and second practice sessions at the 14-turn, four-mile track, with his fastest lap coming in the morning.

"This weekend is starting off pretty well," Lamb said. "The car was great as soon as we rolled it off the trailer. AMG really has things figured out with this car, because my teammates are up front as well. This is great for the team. We're working well together in the draft. I love this track and its great being here."

Lamb had originally planned on running both the KONI Challenge race in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada this weekend, along with MX-5 Cup, but opted for a less hectic weekend.

"This weekend I'm just running MX-5 Cup," Lamb said. "We decided not to run at Trois-Rivieres, so I'm focusing on this. We thought about doing the back and forth at Trois-Rivieres, but it was just going to be too much. It'll be nice to be able to relax a little bit."

Relax may not be the right word for the weekend. Though he is rewriting the MX-5 Cup record books, winning every race he's entered this season from pole, Lamb doesn't plan on taking it easy any time soon.

"We're not getting too comfortable," Lamb added. "We know we have to win the next four races, so we're pushing as hard as we can every time. It's great to win races, obviously, so we want to make sure we're up front, making a fight of it every weekend."

Second in practice was the No. 92 Hale Motorsports/NetEvidence/Alliance 1 MX-5 of Wilson. With the Hale Motorsports crew unable to make the trip to Road America, Wilson is getting a hand from the Atlanta Motorsports Group with weekend. Wilson clocked his fastest lap, a 2:40.820 (90.615 mph) in the morning session.

Driving the No. 31 Team MER/RaceNowforAutism/Frank's Int. MX-5, Mosing's morning time of 2:41.137 (90.437 mph) was good enough to put him third on the day.

Justin Piscitell, of Patterson, N.Y. was fourth fastest in the No. 89 ALARA Racing/DAMG Racing/MAZDASPEED MX-5. Piscitell's quickest practice lap was a 2:41.366 (90.309 mph).

Nick Mancuso, of Mettawa, Ill., completed the top five, entering a 2:41.442 (90.266 mph) in the No. 29 Team MER LakeForestSportsCars/Tire Lyna MX-5.

Lyonel Kent was sixth quickest in the practice order, followed by point leader Marc Miller, who was unable to turn a lap in the second practice session after an electrical problem on his No. 28 Team MER/MOCA/RaceNowforAutsim/MMP MX-5 stranded him in pit lane.

Newcomers Jamie Slone and Dennis Trebing, were eighth and ninth, respectively.

Zach Ply completed the top 10 though he turned no laps in the second session, after hitting the tire wall at Turn 12 in the morning.

All of the top 10 times were turned in the 20-minute morning session, which was combined with the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Cars.

Qualifying for Round Seven of the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. (CDT) Saturday. The 45-minute race will go green Sunday at 5:15 p.m. Live timing and lap notes are available all weekend at www.mx-5cup.com. The series can also be followed on Twitter
