June 4, 2001: The Ferrari of Washington team of Ashe, Boros, Scweitz and Dobyns took victory Saturday in the 3rd annual 12 Hours at the Point sports car endurance race. Taking the overall and ITE win, the Ferrari of Washington Ferrari 348 dominated the event from the green flag to the checker. Second place overall and in ITE was the PFS Peter Farrell Supercars Mazda RX7 of Turner, Crawford and Farrell. The Ferrari of Washington team set a new distance record as well. Their 934 miles (467 laps) broke the 1999 record held by the Radial Tire Datsun 240z of Lucas/Jeter/Gaynor/Legg.
Third overall and first in the Spec Miata class was the Octagon Motorsports Mazda Miata of Traut and Traut. The Octagon Motorsports Miata completed 4 laps more than the fourth overall and second place Beason Venture Management Spec Miata of Nolft/Elder/Sweeney. The Octagon Motorsports Miata established the Spec Miata distance record at the Point with 437 laps (874 miles) completed.
Only two laps separated the first three ITS finishers in the 12 Hours at the Point. Perhaps the hardest fought battle of the event, the ITS lead see-sawed the entire day with at least 6 teams leading the class before falling back with mechanical problems. The RC Imports Mercedes of Zelones/Arzola/Shipman completed 432 laps and took the victory in ITS and fifth overall. The Dura Racing Toyota Supra of Caldwell/Griffiths/DeFontes placed sixth overall and second in ITS. Third in ITS and seventh overall was the Legg Mason Funds BMW325i of Sarran/Wade/Hughes.
Completing 428 laps (856 miles) and finishing eighth overall (third in Spec Miata) was The Dealer Alternative East Mazda Miata of Lentz/Zimmermann/Casson. The VW GTI VR6 of Sprinke/Deroisers/Kintz finished forty-six laps behind the overall leader in ninth overall and third in ITE.
The ITA class proved to be the tightest race of the 12 Hours at the Point. At the conclusion of 12 hours of hard fought racing, first and second in ITA both completed 419 laps (838 miles). The Trane HCFC-123 Honda CRXsi of Roth/Peterson/Peterson took tenth overall and first in ITA by only 2.2 seconds! Just nipped at the wire for the ITA win was the Next Day Air Racing Mazda RX7 of Westerman/Taylor/Jordan.
Long-time DC Region members James Harrison and Dave Coleman took the ITB win with 407 laps in their OG Racing VW Golf. The OG Racing VW Golf finished 21st overall. Second in ITB (28th overall) was the Olympic Auto Parts BMW 2002 of Allard/Fosler/Radford.
By a two lap margin, first in ITC went to the York Automotive Honda Civic of Bell/Frye/Hoffman/York. The York Automotive Team wins the hard charger award for this event. The team, lead by Bad Al Bell held a commanding lead over the Ford Escort of Flinchbaugh/Silvers as darkness approached, but a lengthy pit stop to fix brake lights put the team down by more than one lap. In the darkness, the York Automotive Team managed to undo the lapping and pass the Flinchbaugh/Silvers Escort for the lead. The Flinchbaugh/Silvers Escort finished 2 laps down, but the margin was closer than this. The Escort misjudged the fuel needed to make it to the checker and with 2 laps remaining, the team reportedly ran out of fuel and parked the car out on the course.
Honors in SSB went to the DWWMotorsports.com Mazda Miata of Woodle/Kleeman. The DWW Motorsports Mazda finished 25th overall and 398 laps. Second in SSB belongs to the European Auto Repairs Dodge Neon of Morris/Ochoa/Suter/McGurgan.
First in SSC went to the Kumho Tires Nissan 200SX of Williamson/Walsh. The Kumho Tires Nissan finished 410 laps and a very respectable 18th overall. Second in SSC went to The Dump Boutique Dodge Neon of Robinson/Lipperini/Delea/Cefalo.
Rounding out the classes, first in the Spec Mazda RX7 class went to the Mazda RX7 of Bourne/Zalner/Zalner. The class winners managed to complete 406 laps, only 4 more than the second place Mazda RX7 of Lapos/Lanning/Morgan/Plummer.
