Economy, Fuel Prices Don't Deter SCCA Racers from June Sprints

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 19, 2008) -- As costs go up, numbers go down--at least that seems to be the trend for race participation across North America. Average participation numbers in SCCA Club Racing National events are down approximately 15 percent nationwide. Yet, the Chicago Region June Sprints®, traditionally SCCA's largest National race of the year, bucks the trend, with pre-event entries up 25 percent over 2007, some 300 cars above the national average.

More than 450 racers from across the nation, including 32 former and defending SCCA National Champions, are expected to make the trek to Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wis., this weekend for the 53rd running of the June classic at the oldest purpose-built race track in the United States.

The event is so large that it takes three days to squeeze all nine race groups into a single National weekend. In fact, the 87-car Spec Racer entry is larger than the total car count at a handful of 2008 events. Practice and qualifying commence Friday, with final qualifying and racing throughout Saturday and Sunday.

The event serves as the first leg of the Chicago Region SCCA Triple Crown®, which a driver can earn by winning the June Sprints, their Divisional points championship and the SCCA National Championship Runoffs in October. Brad Stout (Formula Vee), Brian Tomasi (Formula Continental), Niki Coello (Formula Continental), Hans Peter (Formula Atlantic) and Mark Mercer (Sports 2000) are all former Triple Crown winners attempting to claim the award once again. Stout has won the honor a record three times, while Coello and Peter have both earned two Triple Crowns in their respective careers.

SCCA.com will offer periodic reports and results. Stay tuned to the featured event link on the site's home page.
