LEXINGTON, Ohio (October 8, 2000)-- The 2000 edition of the Valvoline Runoffs concluded today with eight more National Champions being crowned. Under overcast clouds in cold conditions, the day began with race 17, C Sports Racer. Losing the lead in the first corner, Al Beasley Jr, of Windham, Ohio, in a Beasley B-2, battled back to win his second consecutive National Championship of these runoffs. Completing the top-three was Jacek Mucha, of Laval, Can., in a Ralt Beasley B2 and Jeff Miller, of Plymouth, Wis., in a Wynnfurst CSR. Race two of the day was Sports 2000. Jeff Clinton, of St. Louis, Mo., in a Lola T97-90, inherited the lead early in the race and never relinquished it en route to his first National Championship. Alexander Smith, of Voorhees, N.J., in a Pratt Miller RM, worked his way through the field to finish second, while David Dullum, of Falls Church, Va., in a Lola S2, finished third. Race 19 of the weekend, Formula Ford, was run on a treacherous track with freezing rain and sleet. Recovering from contact on the opening lap, Chris Winkler, of Farmington Hills, Mich., captured the win, Van Diemen's first since 1993. Mark Jaremko, of Spokane, Wash., in a Stohr, spun early, but finished second, while Mike Sauce, of Arlington, Texas, in a Sauce, captured the final podium position. Following the lunch break Formula Continental took to the track for race 20 in snow and sleet. Tonis Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill., in a Mygale, took the lead on the opening lap and led flag-to-flag. Reigning U.S. F2000 American Continental Champion, Tom Dyer, of San Rafael, Calif., in a Carbir, excelled in the tricky conditions finishing second. Completing the top-three was John Brumder, of Boulder, Colo., in a Van Diemen. In race 21, GT2, David Finch, of Ann Arbor, Mich., in a Porsche 944, used a mixed weather setup to capture the win. Making a late charge on a drying track, Jim Blakewell, of Oklahoma City, Okla., in a Porsche 914/6, finished second. Starting last, Tom Patton, of Hamilton, Ohio, in a Sunbeam Tiger, stormed through the field to finish third. Next on the schedule was race 22, G Production, quite possibly the most exciting race of the day. A four-car battle for the lead ensued all race long, with John Baucom, of Charlotte, N.C., in a Fiat Spider, coming out on top, to capture his second National Championship of the weekend. Surviving numerous incidents, Thomas Reichenbach, of Livonia, Mich., in a Fiat X1/9 and Kent Prather, of Wakarusa, Kansas, in a MG A, finished second and third respectively. In race 23, GT1, Jeff Ervin, of Chesaning, Mich., in a Ford Mustang, made a late charge to take the lead and the win. Tim Cowen, of Ashland, Ohio, in a Ford Mustang, finished second after leading most of the race, while Jack Busch, of Torrington, Conn., in a Olds Cutlass, completed the top-three. The final race of the Valvoline Runoffs, Formula Atlantic, had Larry Connor, of Centerville, Ohio, in a Ralt RT-41, lead flag-to-flag to the win. Unchallenged in second place was Brian French, of Sheboygan, Wis., in a Ralt RT-41, while Kristopher Kaiser, of Abbottstown, Pa., in a Ralt RT-40, drove a strong race to finish third. The 2000 edition of Valvoline Runoffs crowned 22 new National Champions over three days of exciting racing in varying weather conditions. The 38th year of the Valvoline Runoffs will return to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car course next October.
