RACE: SPEED Channel to broadcast SCCA runoffs

SPEED Channel to broadcast all 24 SCCA Club Racing National Championship Races from Valvoline Runoffs®

CENTIENNIAL, Colo. (May 7, 2002)* For the eighth-straight year, SPEED Channel will televise the crown jewel event of the Sports Car Club of America-the Valvoline Runoffs®.

All 48.0-mile Championship races, which highlight top drivers from around the country in an event revered as the "Olympics" of motosports, will be recorded and aired on the SPEED Channel network-the only network dedicated to provide comprehensive, authoritative coverage of motorsports.

For the second-straight year, each of the 24 races will be broadcast. Prior to 2001, five races were shown live each afternoon (a total of 15), with taped highlights of the morning contests shown on a time-permitting basis.

"It's a grueling weekend to produce 24 races, but both our road racing production crew and broadcast team are more than up for the challenge."

Now in its ninth year at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the Valvoline Runoffs continue to grow in both number and stature. Despite being held one week following the September 11th attacks, the 2001 event saw a total of 639 competitors take the green flag in pursuit of the ultimate title in club road racing- SCCA National Champion.

The year-end "runoff" originated in 1964 and alternated between Daytona International Speedway and Riverside Raceway, in Riverside, Calif., before settling at Road Atlanta for 24 years. Mid-Ohio began hosting the weeklong spectacle in 1994, with the event growing at a consistent rate since then. Now, the event stretches to seven days, with more than $1.4million in contingency payouts available.
