Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, May 15, 2007 - Over seventy-five Sports 2000 drivers will be gathering to celebrate this popular class' 30th "birthday party" at the historic Road America track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Competitors from California, Arizona, Oregon, Florida, North Carolina, New York and nearly every state will be arriving Thursday for first practice.
Pro-Motion principal and Pro Formula Atlantic promoter Vicki O' Connor will be an honored guest as well as Olympian medal-winner and Historic Grand Prix driver, Divina Galica, winner of the first Sports 2000 race at Brands Hatch in England in the fall of 1977 in a Lola T-490. Cars manufactured by such famous marques as March, Chevron, Lola, Swift, Tiga and Royale will be present. Several former SCCA National champions, 2007 champ Mark Mercer and 2006 champ Marc Walker, are confirmed to attend and race this weekend. This weekend also commemorates thetwenty-fifth anniversary of the inaugural "Road America Cup," the first organized Pro series for these cars, with series veterans John Stagl, Don Braaten and Scott Livingston attending.
Sports 2000 was created in England by circuit owner and promoter John Webb to fill the gap of 2-liter FIA Group 6 sports racers as those racers became too expensive to compete and too rare. Sports 2000 cars, a majority of which boast aluminum monocoque "tubs," similar in construction to airplanes and Can-Am cars, became the third most popular class in SCCA for nearly a decade, behind Formula Vee and Formula Ford. Indy pole winner Scott Sharp and Cart Champ Jimmy Vassar plied their trade in this wonderful sports car class throughout the 1980's. Even television commentator and personality Calvin Fish finished second to third place Indy 500 finisher Steve Knapp in the 1985 Sports 2000 Pro Series.
