Subarus Battle it Out For Top Spot at SCCA ClubRally National Championship

SALEM, Mo. (Feb. 21, 2004) -- Steve Gingras, of Elk River, Minn., and Bill Westrick, of Royal Oak, Mich., may not have been in the fastest car on the road overall in either Friday's Trespassers Wil or Saturday's 100 Acre Wood ClubRallies, but Gingras' 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX was the best among competitors eligible for the ClubRally SCCA ClubRally National Championship.

For Gingras/Westrick, their championship came down to the final three stages between them and the team of driver Piotr Wiktorczyk, of Chicago, Ill., and co-driver Mark McAllister, of Woodside, N.Y.

Wiktorczyk, in a 2000 Subaru Impreza RS, actually won the day two portion -- 100 Acres Wood -- among CRNC eligible entrants by three seconds over Gingras, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 49-second deficit he had suffered after light problems cost Wiktoczyk on the first day.

"Today we had a battle," Gingras said, who claimed his third CRNC overall (two in Production GT) and first in Open Class competiton. "We were tied after the first three stages today and then going into the last stage it was...full speed ahead, charging blind into Dennis' (Martin's) dust.

"We actually beat Dennis on time and I drove without any mistakes. We went into the last time control thinking we had done it and found out we were three seconds shy (of winning both Trespassers Wil and 100 Acre Wood among CRNC competitors)."

Mike Hurst, of Indianapolis, Ind. earned his third consecutive Group 5 Class championship by in his 1993 Ford Mustang with the help of long-time co-driver Rob Bohn, of Noblesville, Ind., and did so in grand fashion, taking the class win by a whopping 8:33 over the 1972 Chevrolet Corvette belonging to Doug Jenkins, of St. Louis, Mo., with co-driver, Brian Schwantner, of Cedar Hill, Mo.

In Production GT, Todd Moberly, of Pueblo West, Colo., with co-driver Ray Moberly, of Colorado Springs, Colo., swept the class competition both days in their 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX to claim the class national championship outright over Patrick Moro, of Dublin, Ohio, with co-driver Mark Adkins, of Hilliard, Ohio, who were in Moro's own 2002 Subaru WRX.

Group 2's outcome took a turn, literally, when the 1990 Honda Civic driven by Steve Perret, of Bellingham, Wash., with co-driver Kathryn Hansen, of Friday Harbor, Wash., rolled on 100 Acre Wood's fourth stage. Both competitors were OK and fared much better than the car, which was unable to continue. With first-day leader Perret/Hansen out, the third-place finisher from day one, Brian Scott, of Cave Creek, Ariz., with co-driver David Hackett, of Reno, Nev., put together a monstrous Saturday and leapfrogged into first in their 2002 Ford SVT Focus to win the championship over the 1988 Isuzu Impulse driven by Randy Bailey co-driver Will Perry, both of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.

Jim and Kaari Cox, of Hamel, Minn., claimed the Production Class championship in their 1989 Chevrolet S 10 pickup over the "Rally Beetle," a 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle, driven by Mark Tabor, of West Linn, Wash., with co-driver Kevin Poirier, of Ranier, Wash. Tabor was attempting to win a CRNC in the same car that Mike Halley drove in 2003 to claim the SCCA ProRally Production Class title.

NOTE: Dennis Martin, of Green Bay, Wis., with co-driver Alan Perry, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., placed first overall in both rallies, but was later confirmed as not taking part in the CRNC, giving the overall Championship win to Gingras.
