Rain Can't Dampen Competition at Peru National Tour

PERU, Ind. (July 7, 2009) - The opening day of competition at the Tire Rack SCCA Peru National Tour may have been a soggy one, but that didn't stop drivers from 29 states and two Canadian provinces from attacking the courses at Grissom Aeroplex. With dry weather on Sunday, many drivers were desperate to make up for time lost in the rain, providing several miraculous finishes.

In H Stock, Jimmy Crawford, of Milwaukee, Wis., held a slim lead over Jeff Jacobs, of Philadelphia, Pa., after day one. Driving the MiniUSA.com/Helix MINI Cooper, Jacobs put the hammer down on day two, forcing Crawford to push his car to the limit. Crawford's valiant attempts in a datatoys.com in-car video systems MINI Cooper ended with a cone on his final run and Jacobs taking the win.

Matthew Glagola's shot at the Street Touring Sport win was also foiled by cones. Glagola, of Atlanta, Ga., thought he'd be defending his day one lead from Geoffrey Chambers, of Fishers, Ind., in the Aim Tuning/IANA Mazda Miata, when in fact it was Ian Baker, of Herndon, Va., who was on a charge Sunday in the Stranoparts/Koni Honda CRX Si. Two coned runs prevented Glagola in the Honda CRX Si from catching Baker, who took the STS win by 0.177-second.

C Street Prepared offered the closest finish of the weekend. Ivan Austin, of Crystal, Minn., was the only driver in class to hit the sub-45-second mark on Saturday, but struggled on Sunday, collecting not one, two or three, but four cones on his first run. Driving a Team One Out/MAZDASPEED Mazda Miata, Austin was able to regain his composure for the remaining runs just in time to hold off co-driver Harry Aro, of Duluth, Minn., and take the CSP win by 0.018-second.

Co-drivers also produced a tight finish in C Modified. Mark Lamm, of Brownsburg, Ind., and Randall Turner, of Indianapolis, Ind., shared a Dulon MP15. Turner led after day one, but by day two, Lamm was able to squeak past for a 0.099-second win.

Co-drivers of a different kind, husband and wife, took wins in C Prepared and C Prepared Ladies. B. Scott Lewis, of Columbia City, Ind., had the CP class covered in a Chevrolet Camaro by 0.845-second, while Kathleen Lewis piloted the Camaro to a 1.237-second victory in CPL.

Jarrod Hoops, of Midland, Mich., collected a dominant win in Street Modified. Making the most of the rain on Saturday, Hoops pulled out a sizable lead in his Showcase Mitsubishi/PureTuning Mitsubishi EVO on day one and expanded it to a full 4.162 seconds to take the SM win over Martin Valent, of Charleston, W.V., in a Toyota Celica.

Wisconsinites faced off for the Super Stock win, that largest class of the weekend. Try as he might in his Mercuryracing.com Chevrolet Corvette, Steve Wynveen, of Germantown, Wis., was unable to catch the Corvette of Christopher Shay, from Fredonia, Wis., who took the win by 0.223-second.

The contest in SS Ladies was even closer, as day one leader Donna Marx of Richmond, Va., struggled in the Title Exam Corp./Team Jester Racing Chevrolet Corvette on day two. This allowed Crissy Weaver, of Beavercreek, Ohio, to pounce in the Premier Fitness Chevrolet Corvette and take the win by a slim 0.192-second.

The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour doesn't have a moment to rest, as it moves across the country to Hampton Mills, in Packwood, Wash., on July 11 -- 12, for the Packwood National Tour.
