SOLO: Two new classes announced

Two new classes announced for SCCA Solo competition

TOPEKA, Kan. (March 4, 2004) -- Sports Car Club of America, Inc. Solo Department announced today the addition of the Street Touring Sport-2 (STS-2) and Street Touring Ultra (STU) classes, effective immediately.

The classes join Street Touring Sport (STS) and Street Touring Xtra (STX) in order to expand the wildly popular Street Touring division. Primarily, STU enables competitors to drive sport sedans and Grand Touring cars such as the Subaru Impreza WRX Sti, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Dodge Neon SRT-4.

STS-2 will feature two-seat automobiles such as the Honda CRX and the normally-aspirated version of the popular Mazda RX-7.

"The Street Touring category has been a huge success," Director of Solo and Road Rally Tasha Goodale said. "These new classes represent the chance for a greater variety of cars to come out and compete. This will add to the popularity of Solo competition and it addresses a larger goal; introducing new enthusiasts to SCCA."

Howard Duncan, SCCA Vice President of Program Development said the introduction of the classes provides some insight into the future for SCCA Solo competition.

"The new STU and STS-2 classes extend the core values of the Street Touring concept and allows car owners to test their street performance vehicles, including emissions legality and true street tires, in a proper setting," Duncan said. "STU provides a great competitive opportunity for the new wave of more powerful sports coupes and sedans that represent an important element of the future of SCCA while STS-2 appeals to a traditional base of SCCA, utilizing small inexpensive sports cars."

Aside from the Sti, Evolution and SRT-4, cars eligible in STU include: Audi S4, BMW M3 (E30 and E36), BMW 330i Performance Package, Volvo S60 R, Mazda RX-8, Nissan 350Z, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and Toyota Supra.

Other cars eligible in STS-2 include: Honda del Sol, first generation Mazda Miata and Toyota MR-2..
