MEGENBIER EXTENDS VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI CUP WIN STREAK TO TWO AT MID-OHIO
Illinois teenager exits Round Four as the new championship leader

LEXINGTON, OHIO (June 21, 2009) -- Timmy Megenbier has become the driver to beat in the competitive Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, winning Round Four over the weekend (June 20-21) at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Melrose Park, Ill., driver, having won two consecutive races and finished on the podium in the past three races, now leads the championship standings.

While Megenbier entered the fourth event of the 10-race Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup having never competed at the technical Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, it did not take long for the talented teenager to make his mark. After learning the ins-and outs of the former home of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs in a damp morning practice session, Megenbier was among those challenging for the pole position when qualifying got underway. Continually picking up speed in the 30-minute session, the 17 year-old was only a few tenths back of the fastest time when the checkered flag waved, earning a P3 starting position.

Megenbier was soon back behind the wheel of his No. 17 Chicagoland VW.com/Caputo Foods VW Jetta ready to challenge for top honors. When the green flag flew to get the racing action underway, the Round Three winner immediately challenged for second place. This quickly became a fight for the lead, when the polesitter slid off-course in turn two. Showing the racecraft of a potential champion, Megenbier proceeded to pressure the new race leader lap after lap, waiting for the right opportunity to pass. The Illinois race pilot got the chance on lap five, and promptly made his move via a nice out-braking maneuver. Once out-front, Megenbier ran mistake-free lap after lap around the technically demanding road course, never giving second place a chance to retake the lead. Megenbier scored his second consecutive Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup win taking the checkered flag two tenths of a second ahead of second place. With his second win and third podium finish in the opening four races of the season, the second-year driver now leads the championship fight by 19 points.

"I really couldn't have asked for anything more today," said Megenbier. "Heading into the race, I knew where the good places to pass were going to be, and I just waited for the opportunity to make it happen. I have to give it to Joey [Atterbury] for racing clean today and not trying to block my move. I simply out-braked him, and he let me go. It feels amazing that I've been able to make it two in a row now and have moved into the Championship lead. Hopefully, I'll be able to make it three in a row at our next race, which is at my home track."

Megenbier resumes his chase for the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup title on July 25-26, with Round Five at the Autobahn Country Club just outside of Chicago.
