2002 has started of right for the new Syko Racing team. First Place is the word for the season. First place finish for the first race of the season; the Laughlin Desert Challenge.
First, thanks to the many team members of Syko Racing and Turner Motorsports who joined teams this race and for the balance of the season who came together and got the truck ready for this race. Good Job!
Day one of the two day format, started with Dave Sykes driving the truck to a three second victory on Saturday over the always boisterous Marc (I AM MARC STEIN!) Stein (brother of Dave/Dale/Laura). Marc and I drove our tails off and we averaged over 51 mph for day one of the race. I never did pass Marc, as he started 30 seconds before our truck, but always was running just south of his large dust trail. Our game plan was to stay close enough to put the pressure on Marc and either finish with a first place within corrected time or push Marc to make a mistake and pass him. No one thought it would be this close! Sitting in the co-rider seat for his first off road race was Travis Clarke who I am sure is now an addicted off road racer.
Travis says "I can't believe these trucks can go this fast" as we pass a class 7 truck running down one of the many pole line roads. It was so close at the finish that no one other than the official SCORE timer new the "real" winner. So, while Marc was giving a reporter the winners story for his team, I rushed to the scoring center and got the "official" word that Syko Racing had won by the 3 seconds. I rushed back to where our trucks were and where Marc was giving the reporter his story and informed all interested parties of the outcome. If only I had a picture of that moment..... The reporter turns to me and says "you are the winner?" and Marc uses his always eloquent vocabulary to express his surprise. Competition amongst brothers is always so much fun.
Day two (Sunday) of this 7th annual Laughlin Desert Challenge had Dave Turner (who is the new truck preparation company owner; Dave Turner Motorsports) sitting behind the wheel to compete against Mike McComas who was now the driver of the Ace Motorsports truck and the rest of the field (including Hemet favorite; Travis Waiser and 2001 champion John Griffith). Dave drove the truck like he stole it and crushed the field on Sunday to complete the two day sweep for Syko Racing. Great job by Dave who had never driven the truck in a previous race. Looks like a good team!
Our plans for 2002 are to compete in all SCORE races for the balance of this season and all BITD races for 2002. We all hope that this race is indicative of the how this new team is going to compete for the balance of this season. One down, 10 to go!
