Hardesty, Noe, Vanderwey, Hall, Holmes, Moss, Ledezma, Seeley, Solorzano all lead classes heading to season-ending nationally-televised 39th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 peninsula run Nov. 15-18 in Baja California, Mexico

LOS ANGELES--With a timely assist behind the wheel from his older brother Tim Herbst at last weekend's 11th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, Las Vegas' Troy Herbst has assumed the overall and unlimited Class 1 point lead after five events in the six-race 2006 SCORE Desert Series. Herbst and the World's Foremost Desert Racing Series now prepare to head to Mexico for November's season-ending 39th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

With Tim Herbst, 43, doing all of the driving except the last 100 yards to the finish line to secure his points, Troy Herbst, 40, still recovering from major surgery he underwent in late July on his left Achilles tendon, picked up his third straight Class 1 win of the season in Primm and his 21st since 1997. The Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car, called the 'Landshark' because of its paint scheme and its performance, is the winningest SCORE race vehicle in the last decade.

After a rare did-not-finish in the season opener in Laughlin, Troy Herbst and his regular co-driver, Larry Roeseler, 49, Hesperia, Calif., won Class 1 in both the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March and June's Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and combined with the Primm win, they have earned 296 SCORE championship points for 2006.

With one class win and four top six finishes, Las Vegas' B.J. Baldwin, 27, who has been desert racing since he graduated from Durango High School in Las Vegas in 1997, continues to lead the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800 horsepower unlimited production trucks in the Baldwin Motorsports No. 97 Chevy Silverado and is fourth in the SCORE Overall standings with 270 points.

Second in both the SCORE Overall points and in the unlimited Class 1, just five points behind Troy Herbst/Larry Roeseler, are brothers Gary and Mark Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore. In a Chevy-powered Jimco, while third Overall and third in Class 1 with 273 points is the team of Richard Boyle, Ridgecrest, Calif./Ron Brant, Oak Hills, Calif., in another Jimco-Chevy.

The Weyhrichs won the season-opener in Laughlin and held the class 1 points lead until finishing second to the Herbsts in Primm.

"The Terrible Herbst Motorsports 'Landshark' has been an amazing race car, but it has been a complete team effort to have the results we have had since it debuted," said Troy Herbst, a six-time SCORE Class 1 season point champion. "We are a family team with a whole lot of great people who help make it all happen. Larry Roeseler has been a tremendous second driver the past several years and my brothers (Ed and Tim) have always been there when we needed extra help. All of our energies now are clearly focused on our next mission--to win the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 for the third straight year. A three-peat would be beyond our wildest dreams, but it can be accomplished and you can be sure that we'll give it our very best attempt."

This year's season-ending 39th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will be a race down the Baja California, Mexico peninsula, starting in Ensenada and finishing in La Paz. It will be held Nov. 15-18.

The legendary race will again be televised in the U.S. as a one-hour sports special on NBC TV for the third consecutive year and for the first time, through the efforts of SCORE TV production partner Aura360, will be televised worldwide on ESPN International. Second unit personnel from Spyglass Entertainment, producers of a full-length feature film about the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, will also be doing research and scene shots at the event.

SCORE points are determined by both finishing positions as well the number of starters in each class and Class 1 has had the large starting field in three of the first four races with 37 taking three green flag in Laughlin, 35 in San Felipe and 37 in Primm while SCORE Trophy-Truck had 37 starters to lead the field in June's Tecate SCORE Baja 500.

Fifth in overall points and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck after his second career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in Primm is defending class season point champion Bob Shepard, Phoenix, with 264 points in a Chevy CK1500.

While the top five overall point leaders are separated by just 32 points, the second five are split by only eight points.

Sixth in overall four-wheel vehicle points with 2263 is defending SCORE overall and Class 1-2/1600 season point champion Caleb Gaddis, El Centro, Calif., who is leading his class again this year in a Curry-VW.

Brian Burgess, Riverside, Calif./Dan Folts, Chino, Calif., are seventh overall and second in Class 1-2/1600 with 262 points in a SFI-VW while eighth overall and fourth in Class with 260 is the team of Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif./Dave Mason, Valley Center, Calif., in a Jimco-BMW.

Ninth overall are two-time defending season and current SCORE Lite point leaders Tim Noe, El Centro, Calif./David Scaroni, Heber, Calif., with two race wins this year and 258 pointsin a Jimco-VW.

In 10th overall and fifth in Class 1 with 256 points is Brian Parkhouse, Bell Gardens, Calif., in yet another of the very popular Jimco-Chevy open-wheelers.

After two of three SCORE Desert Series races for motorcycles, the overall motorcycle point leaders are the team of Brian Pinard, Murrieta, Calif./Taber Murphy, Wenatchee, Wash., who lead Class 30 for riders over 30 years old, with 143 points on a Honda XR650R. The only four-wheel vehicle team to start the year with four straight wins are brothers Donald Moss, Sacramento, Calif./Kenneth Moss, Marysville, Calif., who lead Class 3 in their sturdy Ford Bronco.

The other 4-wheel vehicle class points leaders with three wins in four races are: Darren Hardesty, Ramona, Calif. (Class 10, AlumiCraft-VW), brothers Nick Vanderwey/Michael Vanderwey, Phoenix/Larry Vanderwey, Litchfield Park, Ariz., (Class 8, GMC Sierra), John Holmes, Olivenhain, Calif. (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger), Gus Vildosola Jr., Mexicali, Mexico/Bryan Freeman, Henderson, Nev. (Protruck, Ford F-150), Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 9, Garibay-VW) and Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 11, VW Sedan).

Among the other 4-wheel vehicle class point leaders after three rounds are: Dan Chamlee, Summerland, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger), Mike Horner, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Class 7S, Toyota Tacoma), Mark Handley, San Marcos, Calif. (Stock Full, Ford F-150) and George Seeley, Glendale, Calif. (Class 5, VW Baja Bug).

Among the other motorcycle class leaders after two races, Jim O'Neal, Chatsworth, Calif., and his team, lead Class 40 for riders over 40 years old on a Honda XR650R and with another group of riders, O'Neal is tied in Class 50, for riders over 50, with the Honda XR650R of the team led by rider of record Doug Smith, Upland, Calif.

The 2006 SCORE Desert Series includes the chase for the $50,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus to be awarded to several qualified 2006 SCORE Class point champions.

The 2006 SCORE Desert Series also includes the hunt for the annual Toyota Milestone and $12,000 Toyota True Grit Awards. The prestigious Toyota Milestone Awards are presented to every racer who completes every required mile of every race in the 2006 SCORE Desert Series. The $12,000 Toyota True Grit purse is split among the SCORE season point champions who are also Toyota Milestone award winners in several non-factory-backed classes.
