September 7, 2004 - Heber, CA - The 2004 racing season has been a fulfilling one for the SMD Motorsports team. Finishing 2003 with a Baja 1000 win through the present 2004 season, the team has stepped up to a whole new level of performance, as evidenced by their current points standings in three different categories. Heading into this weekend's SCORE Primm 300, the SMD Motorsports team heads the pack in the points battle for the prestigious Protruck championship. They also lead the Best in the Desert Protruck points' race, and are a close second for the SCORE Protruck championship. "Our team has been incredibly strong this year, and it is not by accident," states driver of record Matt Scaroni." A tremendous effort from the entire team has been put forth in search of not only the Protruck championship, but the Best in the Desert and SCORE titles as well. Make no mistake about it, we want all three!" says Matt Scaroni.
With this weekend's SCORE Primm 300 race clearly being one of the most challenging races of the year, the team is faced with the dilemma of wanting to hold the points lead in the Protruck Series, as well as end the day with a Protruck Class win. Team owner Steve Scaroni had this to say: "For me, I see this as an exciting challenge. The best way to achieve what we are setting out to do would be to go out, win the race and collect the maximum points possible. We are going out there to win, but we have to keep the championship implications in mind as well."
Joining the SMD Motorsports Team this weekend will be Vic Bruckmann, a former SCORE Overall Points Champion. Bruckmann will be teaming with David Scaroni in a SCORE Lite. According to David, the team has one goal. "We are showing up to race with nothing to lose, and we are going to approach everything we do this weekend with that thought in mind."
The SMD team is also pleased to announce that Mark Cowan will be joining the team full time as Crew Chief. With Cowan and Sam Fakih in the shop, the team is looking forward to great things for the remainder of 2004, 2005 and beyond.
