1-2 FOR ATECH REID IN SUPERLEAGUE FORMULA FINALE

Atech Reid brought its Superleague Formula by Sonangol series to a close with a superb 1-2 for FC Porto (Alvaro Parente) and PSV Eindhoven (Esteban Guerrieri) in the second race in Spain today. The team also took third place in the Super Final with PSV Eindhoven but was robbed of second and third places for Liverpool FC's Frederic Vervisch who suffered mechanical woes.

The team once again ran five cars this weekend, with title challenger Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan) and Tristan Gommendy (Olympique Lyonnaise) completing the line-up. Buurman's bid for title honours got off to a great start, the Dutchman setting the early pace in practice on Friday and lining up third for the first race, after a series of nail-biting qualifying rounds.

However at the start Buurman got a slow getaway at the rolling start, dropping down the order as Vervisch leapt into third from sixth on the grid. As the race settled down Buurman began struggling with understeer in the slow corners allowing Parente to close down the gap and push the AC Milan driver for eighth.

Up at the front, Vervisch had closed the gap to second place and with seven minutes remaining looked like a podium spot was in the bag until he was forced to pit for a replacement front wing. There was disappointment for Guerrieri too, the Argentinean awarded a drive-through penalty for driving standards, ending his charge.

This left Buurman to uphold honours for the team bringing the AC Milan car home in seventh just ahead of Parente (FCP) while Guerrieri recovered to finish 11th, Gommendy 14th and Vervisch (LFC) 16th.

Race two's reversed grid had Vervisch line up third and a great start allowed him to hold position at the rolling start before a superb pass on lap two moved him into second. Guerrieri held fifth just ahead of Gommendy, while Parente also moved up the order into ninth.

Vervisch's chances of a podium ended on lap four when a gearbox problem saw him dramatically slow. Guerrieri though was on a charge, the series returnee putting his successful WSR experience this year to good use moving past Seville to take second and a lap later sweeping past AS Roma for the lead.

Behind, a stirring performance by Parente had the FC Porto driver up into third pushing the Seville car ahead but a crash on lap seven forced out the safety car. At the restart several laps later, it was a mad dash to make the mandatory pit stops within the remaining 14 minutes and left Guerrieri and Parente in second and third places.

With just five minutes left a superb push-to-pass effort by the FC Porto driver allowed Parente to sweep ahead as the cars crossed the start finish line. A lap later Guerrieri too swept past the Seville car and into second as the flag fell.

Buurman brought his AC Milan car home in 12th place just ahead of Gommendy (LYO).

The five-lap dash-for-cash Super Final had two Atech Reid drivers on the grid, Guerrieri (PSV) in third and Parente (FCP) in fifth.

At the only standing start of the weekend, Guerrieri made a good getaway to hold position, which he held to the flag, while Parente, after a slow start, recovered to finish fifth.
