CLUB ALL STAR SPRINT RESULTS

Sun. 8/06/95 - Buckeye Raceway By Scott Hall

ORRVILLE, OH - Joey Saldana led only a quarter lap in the 6th annual $29,850 Club All Star Buckeye Sprint Shootout sponsored by Edge Racing Alcohol Sunday night at Buckeye Raceway. But that quarter lap was worth $8,000 as Saldana passed race long leader Frankie Kerr in turn four on the final lap to win his 13th All Star win of the year in a near photo finish. "I figured I'd just slide up in there," Saldana said of his pass for the win in Art Wendt's Stealth with a Gaerte-Chevy powerplant, aboard Goodyear's. "And it worked. I didn't think it would work. I thought for sure he (Kerr) was going to turn and drive off underneath me." Kerr had led the 40-lap contest from the onset, and appeared headed to his second Buckeye win of the season. But his engine began missing. "With about ten to go our motor started missing. At the end it would hardly run," Kerr said of his Stan Shoff J&J. "Joey just beat me." On the last lap, Kerr was in the high groove of the 3/8 mile's turn three. Saldana, who started sixth, was in second, dove under Kerr in turn three, and slid into the lead in four, shocking the crowd. Kerr, with a stumbling powerplant, did not get enough bite off turn four to make his last ditch dive back under Saldana successful, and he had to settle for a close second. Danny Smith ran third the entire race in the Ken Bodkins Jenkins after starting on the pole. Kenny Jacobs started third, and trailed Smith the whole race, never able to get by the low groove running Smith. Jacobs pilots the Warren Johnson Gaerte-powered Schnee. Steve Siegel started 14th in Jimmy Walker's J&J, and by lap 19 had disposed of Van Gurley Jr. for fifth. He challenged Jacobs on a couple of occasions, but could not get by. Jerrod Hull, in his father's Maxim, started eighth and passed Todd Kane for sixth just before the last restart on lap 37. Kane, in the Junior Holbrook Maxim back-up machine, was seventh after running up as high as sixth midway in the event. All Star points leader Dale Blaney started fourth and ran third in the early laps of the event before losing that spot to Saldana. He then spun out of fourth on lap 13, and spent the rest of the race working his way toward the front for eighth in the Hughes Wheel & Axle J&J. Rodney Duncan, in the brand new Jr. Holbrook J&J, was ninth after starting 21st with Bobby Teeple tenth after running in the top five for the first half of the race. Dale Blaney set fast time over the 45 car field and won the Commercial Truck & Trailer dash and the Outerwears Pre-Filters B Main. Dean Jacobs won the ButlerBuilt heat, Chad Kemenah took the United Expresslines heat with Mark Keegan and Rodney Duncan the other heat winners. The Arizona Sport Shirts C Main went to Eric Hysong.
