All Star Sprint Race Results New 96 Speedway (MI) Sat. 7/25/98 by TJ Buffenbarger

LAKE ODESSA, MI - All Star points leader Kenny Jacobs put on a awesome driving display Saturday night at the New 96 Speedway in route to the $4,000 feature win with the All Star Circuit of Champions. Kenny was driving the Tim Hughes owned J&J/Kriner-Chevrolet powered sprint car. This was also the first All Star sprint car race ever at 96 that went green to checkered.

"The car was just awesome tonight. I have to thank Tim Hughes, Todd, and all of the crew." Said Jacobs in victory lane following his seventh win. " This was the most fun I have had racing a car all season."

Local hotshoe Brett Mann was on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat Pole Position with Frankie Kerr on the outside of the front row. Kerr took the lead at the start, but Kenny Jacobs was already flying through the pack from his fourth starting position. By the time the field hit the backstretch, Kenny was in second position and began to run down Kerr. The duo of Kerr and Jacobs set sail on the rest of the field and started to lap slower cars by the fifth circuit.

On lap eight Kenny Jacobs made a daring move coming out of turn four on the low side with a lapped car between himself and Kerr to take the lead. Kenny Jacobs then blasted to a ten car length lead. Just two laps later Kenny's brother, Dean Jacobs moved back into the fifth position after dropping back on the start. The Jacobs brothers were clearly the fastest cars on the race track in the middle stages of the event. Also a battle for third developed between Mann and Butch Schroeder. Schroeder was able to move past Mann on lap 13. When Mann attempted the regain the position he got high in the very heavy cushion and nearly hit the turn four wall. Mann was able to continue on and salvage a top ten finish.

On lap 15 Kenny Jacobs was checked out on the rest of the field with a half track lead over second place Kerr. Many times down the front stretch Kenny would pull the front wheels off the ground to the delight of the large crowd on had. The best battle on the track as this point was between Dean Jacobs and Schroeder for the third position. Dean got the position and began to chase down second place Kerr.

In the closing stages of the event Dean Jacobs was chasing Kerr through the lapped traffic. On lap 28 Dean pulled the biggest wheelstand of the night, burying the back bumper of his Denny Ashworth Schnee nearly half the length of the backstretch without lifting. The battle was so intense that on the last lap Dean Jacobs and Bobby Allen made contact in turn four and took both drivers out of the race coming down to the checkered flag. This handed third position over to Ohio visitor Schroeder in his Leland Gottchalk owned Kistler powered Maxim.

At the finish it was all K. Jacobs, padding his points lead, and giving Tim Hughes a win at the track that saw the HMS Motorsports car run out of fuel on three separate occasions. Caution laps were not a factor in this feature as the race was completed in six minutes and twenty-five seconds. Kerr, Schroeder, Keith Kauffman and Kevin Huntley rounded out the top five. Kenny Jacobs also set fast time over the 30 car field with a lap of 15.599 second, and won his heat race. Other heats were won by Scott Jones and Allen. Kerr won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash, and Mann won the United Expressline B Main. Curt Spalding won the IMCA Feature event, and Mark Anderson won the Street Stock feature.
