All Star Sprint Race Results - Sharon Speedway - Sat. 9/4/99 By Scott Hall HARTFORD, OH - Greg Hodnett found the inside groove before Joey Saldana did, resulting in a win in the All Star sprint 30-lap feature Saturday night at Ed Skillman’s Sharon Speedway on the opening night of the 19th annual Sharon Nationals. Hodnett’s second All Star win of the season was worth $5,000 and came over an impressive 58 car field and a packed house. "I didn’t think there was any chance of catching him (Saldana)," Hodnett recalled. "But lapped traffic went our way. We got a couple of good breaks. I went to lap one guy and he passed me back on the bottom so I thought I better get my rear end down there." Hodnett’s Apple Chevrolet Maxim rode on Goodyear tires and was powered by a Stauffer-Chevrolet engine. "I was running the top the whole race and didn’t see anyone down there," Saldana said of his runner-up run. "It must have just laid a little bit of rubber and those guys were sticking pretty good." He concluded, "That’s what happens when you are leading, sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t. The car was fast enough to win, I just didn’t find the right line at the checkered." James Chesson started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position with Keith Kauffman alongside. The first drop of a green ended in red when Kasey Kahne flipped in turn one. He made quick repairs and rejoined the field on the tail. The next drop of the green saw Chesson lead over Kauffman and sixth starter Joey Saldana. Saldana got past Kauffman on the next circuit, then on a lap three restart, Saldana dove under Chesson in turn three to sweep into the lead. Action was slowed on lap five when Brian Paulus got mixed up with Ed Lynch, Jr. and flipped. Ralph Spithaler and Dean Jacobs both spun and made contact trying to avoid Paulus. On the reappearance of the green, Saldana led again as Hodnett, who started fifth, got past Chesson for second with a high pass going down the backstretch on lap six. From then on, it was a high speed chase in the high groove, with Saldana stretching his advantage over Hodnett. By the halfway point of the 15 mile run, Saldana was back into lapped traffic over Hodnett. Jeff Shepard, up from seventh and Chesson. By lap 18 Hodnett was catching the leader in traffic, and he found the low groove in turns three and four. Saldana got free of traffic, stretching his advantage In the Steve Mox Trucking mount, but by lap 25, he was back in traffic and Hodnett closed quickly. Saldana had trouble passing the lapped car of Butch Schroeder, allowing Hodnett to get right on his tail. Hodnett dove low in turn three on lap 27, but could not get by. He repeated the move on lap 28 to take the lead, and was four car lengths ahead when the checkered flag was dropped. "My ignition was messing up, so we changed a gear under the red to kill our top speed, Shepard said of his third place run. Chesson held on for fourth over ninth starting Rodney Duncan and Lance Dewease while Paul McMahan finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. The United Expressline heat fell to Sean Keen, the Southwest Expressline heat to Butch Schroeder, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Shepard, the second United Expressline heat to Ralph Spithaler and the United Specialties heat went to Chad Kemenah. Lance Dewease won the United Expressline B Main while Andy McKisson won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and Saldana was the fast qualifier. CW Harshman won the Alky slow qualifiers dash. Kenny Jacobs flipped his mount after tagging the turn three guardrail in hot laps. Todd Shaffer took a nasty flip down the front chute in his heat. After scrambling out of his burning car and getting pinned to the ground by his roll cage when the car shifted, he was okay also. Then PJ Chesson hit the wall hard and flipped in his heat and was transported to a local hospital for x-rays on his sore shoulder. Time Trials: 1. Joey Saldana, Mox 17, 15.859; 2.
