Wright Keeps Rollin' With O'Reilly ASCoT Score at Devil's Bowl

MESQUITE, Tex. (May 12, 2007) -- Hooks, TX, legend Gary Wright completed a sweep of the weekend's O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series Red River Shootout by wiring the field in Saturday night's 25-lap feature at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

And he did it utilizing the exact same Hoosier 105/16-15 right rear tire, the series newly-mandated narrower right rear tire, that he used on Friday night at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway to collect $6,000 in weekend winnings.

"It's fun when your car is working that good, the car was really nice tonight," Wright commented after his 112th career ASCS National Tour triumph and sixth of the year in twelve feature events. It also marked his 15th series win atop the famed Devil's Bowl clay oval.

Wright earned the pole position by virtue of winning the Pole Dash and went unchallenged the entire distance aboard the Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction/Whiteco Commercial Funding/Southwest Express No. 9 Maxim.

Wright outgunned fellow front row starter Wayne Johnson, who charged from sixth to second in the Dash, at the outset and wasted little time opening up nearly a straightaway lead before the first of three cautions flew after seven laps just as the leaders reached lapped traffic.

Ensuing cautions flew after ten and 15 laps, with each giving Wright an open track that he took full advantage of. Riding the rim throughout, Wright ultimately crossed the stripe with a half straightaway advantage.

But the action behind him for second was furious. First, Wayne Johnson was busy fending off Kevin Ramey for the spot. And in the closing circuits, it was Jason Johnson's big slides and Wayne Johnson's counter-moves that kept the crowd on its feet.

After starting 15th, Jason Johnson cracked the top ten in Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorpsorts/Custom Equipment Design No. 41 Eagle by the race's first caution. When the race's next caution flew three laps later, "The Ragin' Cajun" had already charged to fourth.

Jason Johnson slid past Ramey for third a lap later and after the race's final caution on lap 15, Johnson & Johnson (Wayne and Jason) traded the runner-up slot at least a handful of times. But each time Jason Johnson put on the big slide, Wayne Johnson countered by racing underneath Jason Johnson exiting the corners to maintain the position.

Wayne Johnson ultimately took possession of the runner-up slot for keeps with four laps remaining and held Tim Hammers' Wesmar-powered H&H Enterprises No. 94 Eagle in the position to the line.

Jason Johnson settled for third, commenting on his torrid battle with Wayne Johnson that, "Too bad it wasn't for the lead."

Two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion Ramey was fourth across the line in Tom Willis' Wells-powered Commercial Music No. 7m Eagle. After starting eighth, Travis Rilat rounded out the top five aboard the Motor Mike-powered F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X.

Darren Stewart claimed sixth, with Justin Zimmerman posting his best career finish in ASCS National action by crossing the stripe seventh. Leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Foster Landon was eighth, with Skip Wilson in ninth. After a dominating drive in the "B" Main, Trey Robb raced from 17th to complete the top ten just one day after celebrating his 15th birthday.

Danny Jennings, Michael Lang and Kenneth Walker topped heat race action before Robb posted his straightaway romp in the "B" Main. All three heat winners were "DNF's" in the feature. Lang pulled pitside early, Jennings left a few laps after a lap ten spin and Walker surrendered the sixth spot under the lap ten caution with smoke billowing from his powerplant.

Rookie of the Year contender Andy Shouse advanced eleven positions in the feature by racing from the 22nd and final position to claim eleventh.

Brad Bowden held a commanding lead in the night's third heat race only to lose power when an injector nozzle loosened up. Bowden transferred through the "B" Main then climbed to 12th in his Devil's Bowl debut.
