BLOOMINGTON, IN (August 17, 1999) - Bloomington Speedway's 1999 season is down to just a few more races. In a couple of weeks we'll begin crowning champions and honoring the drivers who have committed their summer to entertaining us and competing at the fastest quarter-mile dirt oval in the nation.

Last Friday's program didn't do much to tighten the point battles. With five victories each, Ray Humphrey and Lee Hobbs have been roosting in victory lane almost all season. Humphrey, from Bloomington, claimed his third consecutive O'Neal Wood Products UMP Modified feature Friday, even though he had to start tenth. He made it look easier than it was, while the cars behind him put on a thrilling battle for second. The last point race for the modifieds will be the Sheldon Kinser Memorial on Friday, August 27. Humphrey owns a 21-point lead over last year's division champ, Matt Tiller.

Bloomington's Perry Bruce earned his fourth victory in the Tire & Wheel Center Street Stock division. Bruce and Hobbs, from Bedford, have won every street stock feature but two, this summer. Since working out mid-season engine problems, Bruce has been climbing up the standings, and sits third. With a second place finish on Friday, Hobbs was able to add four points to the buffer between himself and Jerry Hepworth, who is second in the point standings.

The final race for Bloomington's Pennzoil Cup sprint car division points will be the Indiana Five Crown event this Friday. While it pays $2,000 to win the sprint car feature, point leader Derek Scheffel, from Columbus, and challengers Kenny Carmichael (of Terre Haute), Brownsburg's Justin Marvel, Brazil's Eric Burns and Lennie Waltz, from Chrisman, will be keeping one eye on each other throughout the evening. Although Carmichael needs to outscore Scheffel by 20 points to derail the leader at this point, hard luck and heroic performances could cause other last minute shuffling in the final standings.

The Indiana Five Crown program highlights both sprint cars and the NAMARS midgets at five oval tracks this week. The series competes at North Vernon on Tuesday; at Gas City Speedway on Thursday; Bloomington on Friday; Putnamville's Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday; and will conclude at Kokomo on Sunday. Each midget and sprint car main event will pay $2,000 to win, with an extra $1,000 bonus to claim both events on the same night. If any driver can win all five sprint or midget features, he'll earn an extra $20,000 bonus.

The general admission gates at Bloomington will open at 5:30, with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:45. There will not be qualifications for either class. General admission is only $15, with youths 12 and under admitted free with an adult. The pit gate opens at 4:30 and pit admission is $25.
