A KINSER IS AGAIN ON TOP OF BLOOMINGTON POINTS

BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 3, 1998) - His victory in last Friday night's season opening event at Bloomington Speedway has gained the point lead in the Pennzoil Cup sprint car standings for Bloomington's Kelly Kinser. It has been quite a few years since this Kinser cousin has been listed in the track points at the south side oval where Randy and Bob Kinser have earned many of their championships. With the first three races of this season rained out, Kelly picked up points for qualifying fastest, and finishing second in his heat race, to collect the 77 points that put him on top. When the non-winged sprint car specialists roll into Bloomington this Friday, the sprint car standings are likely to change significantly.

Main event triumphs in the opening race have also given Ray Humphrey and Perry Bruce point leads in the open wheel modified division, and the WalMart Tire & Lube Express street stock division. With two feature wins in '97, Humphrey finished fourth in the final open wheel modified standings. This year's modified point battle is wide open as last year's champion (A.J. Bowlen) has moved into truck racing. Second place Kerry Norris also had two wins last season. Matt Tiller, who won a feature last year and finished two points into second, is in a solid fourth place standing. And although Brian Campbell, John DeMoss and Rodney Harris Jr. haven't garnered any main event victories, they have been consistent top five contenders. Street stock champion Denny Campbell competed in his first race at Bloomington since joining the open wheel modified circuit and registered a 17th place finish.

Perry Bruce's win last weekend is the highpoint of his street stock career. His last win occurred in the bomber division. With Denny Campbell graduating to the modifieds, the WalMart Tire & Lube Express street stock division will also see a new titlist in September. With strong runs on Friday, Bruce, Cory Brown, Gerald Todd and Greg Kendall have served notice that they plan to contend for the crown.

Friday, June 5, Bloomington Speedway will present non-winged sprint cars competing for the Pennzoil Cup, joined by the open wheel modifieds and the WalMart Tire & Lube Express street stocks. Plus, motorcycle daredevil Mr. Backwards will attempt to clear four cars on a Harley. The pit gate opens at 4:30, and the grandstand gates at 5:30 pm. Hot laps begin at 6:00, with racing at 7:45. General admission is just $10, with all fans ages 12 and under admitted FREE, when accompanied by an adult. Pit admission is $20.
