BLOOMINGTON, IN (July 5, 2003) - Thousands of cheering race fans wrapped up their Independence Day holiday in grand style last night at Bloomington Speedway. The Giant Ariel Fireworks Display presented each year by Bloomington Power Sports has become so popular, that they would probably draw a big crowd if that was the whole show. However, at Bloomington Speedway, we're all about the best in motorsports. And, that's what we had last night. There were 43 non winged sprint cars, 40 O'Neal Wood Products modifieds, and 29 Tire & Wheel Center super stocks in competition.

For their $10.00 grandstand admission, Bloomington Speedway fans saw 43 qualification runs, 12 heat races, 5 "B" features, 2 dashes, and three big feature events in addition to the fantastic fireworks display. Don't let anything keep this show off of your schedule next season.

SPRINT CARS -

Jon Stanbrough has been on a tear lately; and he continued his winning ways last night on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. Because of his second place qualification effort, Jon started inside of the third row; however, when the green flag dropped to start the feature event Stanbrough charged into second place behind only polesitter Rick Hayden. Hayden's new car is very fast; but not quite fast enough to stay ahead of Stanbrough. On the eighth circuit, Stanbrough took the point that he would not relinquish. He immediately began to stretch out his lead.

Three time Bloomington Speedway sprint car champion and fast qualifier Derek Scheffel had considerable difficulty getting past Hayden; and, by the time he took second he had lost considerable track position to Stanbrough. Scheffel started closing the gap a little; but he was probably going to need a yellow flag if he was to have an opportunity to take the win. He got the yellow on lap 20 when Brian Gerster rolled to a stop outside of turn 4; but Stanbrough was able to hold on for the win; and Scheffel had to settle for second.

Dick Gaines II started ninth and passed points leader Justin Marvel to take fifth on the 12th circuit. He was running on the high side while Tim Spindler was firmly planted on the inside groove; but, on the lap 20 restart Gaines managed to pass Spindler for fourth; and, on the following circuit, he got by Hayden for third where he would finish.

On the white flag lap, Spindler and Jimmy Laser passed Hayden to finish fourth and fifth respectively while Hayden, Justin Marvel, Kenny Carmichael, Scott Hatton, and Kent Christian rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action Gaines, Stanbrough, Hatton, Christian, and Jon Sciscoe won the heat races while Marvel and Hayden prevailed in the "B" features.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS -

Ray Humphrey made another clean sweep in the O'Neal Wood Products modified division in winning his heat, the dash, and the feature with a flag to flag effort. Humphrey and his new car have been so strong this season that he's a favorite for the win every time he rolls off the trailer.

Defending O'Neal Wood Products modified co-champion Matt Boknecht passed Shelby Miles to take second on the sixth lap and held to finish second.

Jeff Bland, Jr. ran another strong race to finish third, while last week's feature winner, Brady Short came from his 13th place starting position a strong fourth. Matt Bex came home fifth.

Shelby Miles pretty much demolished his beautiful #76 at Lincoln Park Speedway last Saturday night; and there was no time to get the car repaired. However, he borrowed the #82 car and drove it to a sixth place finish to stay in the hunt for the championship. Ryan Thomas, Clint DeMoss, Jesse Cramer, and Gary Barrow rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary aciton, Humphrey, Miles, Boknecht, and Thomas won the heat races while Rodney Harris, Jr. and Tim DeMoss prevailed in the "B" features.

The bright spot in the O'Neal Wood Products modified division was the return of John DeMoss to competition. He built a new home over the off season; and that slowed the construction of the new #79d. John was still sorting out the new car last night; but you can bet that he'll be running up front again before long. Welcome back John!

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS -

Last week, Ben DuBois drove the first feature win of his career when he swept the Tire & Wheel Center super stock competition by winning his heat, winning the dash, and leading the feature win. That's a pretty strong performance for a first time winner. How does a racer back up a performance like that? He does the same thing again the next time out.

You're surprised when a driver like Kevin Briscoe, Ray Humphrey, Matt Boknecht, or Lee Hobbs turns in back to back performances like this; but for a driver to score his first two feature wins this way is really something special. Mike Cawood kept DuBois in range; but DuBois was clearly in control. Cawood would have to settle for second.

Danny Harris came from his seventh place starting position to finish third followed by Jeremy Hines and Terry Arthur.

Defending Tire & Wheel Center super stock champion Greg Kendall sixth; and Mickey Hines, Chris Deweese, Kevin Arthur, and Troy Clark rounded out the top ten.

DuBois, Cawood, and Kendall won the heat races while Jack Frye led the dash flag to flag.
