Bloomington Speedway results

BLOOMINGTON, IN (August 7, 2004) -- The South Central Building and Construction Trades Council and their member unions showed up at Bloomington Speedway in force. Their members, when combined with the race fans who show up almost every week, filled the hillside. The weather was pleasant; and the racing was hot.

The The South Central Building and Construction Trades Council has joined us for a night of their own for the past few years. It's an event that their members look forward to all year. And many of them have developed a Bloomington Speedway habit and attend our great races on a fairly regular basis.

SPRINT CARS --

We've been waiting for it all season. We all knew that it was just a matter of time. Last night was the night. Fifteen year old Bryan Clauson finally won his first feature on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway.

As happens as often as not, Kevin Briscoe had quick time followed by Kevin Chambers, Justin Marvel, Kent Christian, Jon Sciscoe, and Bryan Clauson. This would put Clauson on the pole for the feature event. Since everybody was going to make the feature, Bryan was going to have the pole if nobody scratched This was a big break for him; because he would be starting five spots ahead of Briscoe. Of course, when Briscoe is on his game, nobody can start far enough ahead of him to keep out of victory lane.

Kent Christian came from fifth to take the first heat race win. Jon Sciscoe and Bryan Clauson won the other two heat races.

Bryan Clauson beat Jon Sciscoe to the first turn; and he stayed there- Kent Christian got past Sciscoe to finish the first lap in second place. By the end of the second lap Justin Marvel had passed Sciscoe to take third.

On the third lap Kevin Briscoe got together with another competitor and spun out. His car rolled to a stop in the infield; and the caution flag waved for what would be its only time. Briscoe was able to restart; but, the right end of his front axle was bent back by several inches. However, Kevin's car owner and father, Richard Briscoe may bend them that way from now on; because it certainly didn't slow Kevin down any. When the race restarted Kevin started his charge through the field. He put on the kind of charge that only a few drivers can make.

By the end of the fifth lap Kevin was already back to 12th place while Clauson began to stretch out his lead over Kent Christian who continued to run in second and Justin Marvel who held onto third. At the end of the tenth lap Clauson, Christian and Marvel were still 1-2-3; but Briscoe was up to sixth place.

At the end of the 15th lap was up to fifth; and Clauson was coming up behind lapped traffic. The following lap Bryan put Dave Peperak a lap down; and Briscoe had passed Kenny Carmichael to take fourth.

At the end of the 20th lap Clauson still had the lead and had put Ryan Hamilton and Bobby Stines a lap down. However, the bad news for Clauson was that Briscoe had passed Kent Christian to take second and those two lapped cars were all that stood between Bryan and Kevin. Briscoe was running out of laps; but Clauson's lead was diminishing very quickly.

By the end of the 23rd lap, the margin was gone. Briscoe was coming up behind Clauson; and there was more lapped traffic just ahead of him. On the 24th lap, Mitch Cunningham was between Bryan and Kevin.

On the white flag lap Briscoe passed Cunningham; but Clauson got past Kyle Nicholas. Briscoe was held up just enough getting trying to get around Nicholas that Bryan crossed the finish line first to win his first Bloomington Speedway feature.

From the finish line, Clauson commented, "I knew that he (Briscoe) was coming; but all that I could do was get through traffic the best that I could and hope that it was good enough."

Clauson's first Bloomington Speedway win will certainly be one that he'll remember; but there are obviously many, many wins ahead of this talented young racer race tracks everywhere. Like many racers who have gone before him, he scored one of his first big wins on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway.

Kent Christian finished third trailed by Justin Marvel, Kenny Carmichael, Jon Sciscoe, Kevin Charmbers, Josh Cunningham, Scott Martin, and Steve Rone.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS --

Nineteen year old Brady Short of Bedford, Ind. has really come into his own this season. Last season he finished fourth in the O'Neal Wood Products modified points. This season 19 year old Brady Short not only leads the points race at Bloomington Speedway; but he is also atop the points in Indiana with UMP. That's a major accomplishment for any racer. For a nineteen-year-old it is phenomenal.

Brady Short, Jim Hume, Matt Boknecht, and Jesse Cramer started the evening by winning their heat races; and Short won the dash to earn the right to start on the pole for the feature event. Kerry Norris of Columbus narrowly missed transferring to feature when he finished fifth in his heat race. He won the "B" feature in convincing fashion to transfer to the feature.

When the green flag waved to start the O'Neal Wood Products modified feature, Brady Short grabbed the lead that he would hold until the checkered flags waved. Matt Boknecht moved into second place on the fourth lap trailed by Jim Hume, Jesse Cramer, and Jeff Bland, Jr. On seventh circuit Bland moved into third place.

On the 13th lap Kerry Norris and J.P. Hume tangled and spun out. Both of them were unable to restart and were done for the evening. Bland passed Boknecht on the restart to take second place. For the balance of the feature event Bland chased Short; but he ran out of laps before he ran out distance between his battle-scarred mount and the Short machine. Boknecht had settle for third ahead of Cramer, Clint DeMoss, Gary Barrow, Joe Godsey, Ralph Groomer, and Greg Deckard.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS --

There are lots of old wives' tales about things to do to change your luck. If you have a book listing these home remedies, you might want to contact Greg Kendall. He would almost certainly be a buyer. In the first seven events of the season Kendall had three wins, two seconds, a fifth and a 12th. It appeared that, at that rate, he might have had the championship clinched by now. However, about then, his luck went away. Of course winning is not only about luck. It's also about preparation and skill. However, Kendall's problems have been of the sort that no amount of preparation could have prevented them. This week, for instance, he won his heat and the dash. He was scheduled to start the feature on the pole. After he pulled onto the track to line up for the feature event, a tire went flat and he had to return to the work area for repairs. By the time the tire was changed, the race had started; and he had to wait for a yellow flag to enter the fray. He had lost three laps. This simple piece of ill fortune took him from a potential win to a 14th place finish.

Kendall obviously can still drive the wheels off of a car. After all, he won his heat and the dash. If his luck changes soon, he still stands a chance of taking his second Tire & Wheel Center super stock championship. It safe to say that there is nobody who puts more effort into their championship chase than Kendall. But, he could certainly use a little luck about now.

When Kendall was unable to answer the bell, Danny Harris inherited the pole. He took full advantage of the opportunity and led the feature flag to flag and score his third Tire & Wheel Center super stock feature of the season. Chris Deweese chased him for the entire distance to take second place.

On the 20th lap Troy Clark caught and passed Ben DuBois to take third; and DuBois had to settle for fourth. Gary Trammell came from eighth to finish fifth. Kevin Arthur, Gerald Todd, Greg Amick, Anthony Walker, and Tom Ault rounded out the top ten.
