INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (NOV. 29, 2001) - Zach Chappell of Talala, Okla., has been voted 360-cubic-inch sprint car racing's "Driver of the Year" for 2001, according to the National 360 Sprint Car Poll voting panel of manufacturers, media members, promoters and sanctioning officials. Chappell, the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) point champion, earned nine of the eighteen (18) first-place ballots cast. The youngster captured the honors based on a season of consistent finishes in Emmett Hahn's talent-laden touring series.
Ranked second in the poll is United Sprint Car Series (USCS) champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, Tenn., with five first place votes. Rounding out the top five drivers are Knoxville Raceway track champion Randy Martin of California, Mo., United Racing Club (URC) titlist Mike Haggenbottom of Levittown, Penna., and perennial Empire Super Sprints (ESS) champion Mike Woodring of Eden, N.Y. Martin and Haggenbottom each nabbed one blue-ribbon from the panel, as did 2000 "Driver of the Year" Kenny Adams (7th) and Northern Sprint Tour (NST) champion Roger Crockett (9th).
Other point champions in the "top 25" are Tim Allison of the National Racing Alliance (NRA) in 8th, Andy Forsberg of the California Sprint Car Civil War Series in 22nd, and Chad Layton of the Selinsgrove Speedway in 24th.
The National 360 Sprint Car Poll is an official awards program of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum Foundation, Inc.
