Hench Grabs CNYMS Season Opener at Skyline Raceway

Virgil, NY - The Central New York Mini Sprints returned to Skyline Raceway this past Saturday for their season opener with 20 cars on hand to compete for the win. The A-Main event was caution-free with Rick Hench holding off the competition in the Danny Lasoski sponsored #20.

A few drivers had trouble before hot laps were complete, but the field was still strong for the heat races. Marshall Gogg of Stone Ridge, NY held off Don Harvey Jr. of Oneonta, NY in the first heat race. Cory Sparks of Scotia, NY captured his second heat race win of the 2004 season edging out Hench.

Seventeen cars rolled out onto the very fast 3/8-mile speed plant for the A-Main with James Kiser of Whitesboro, NY and Gogg setting the pace on the front row as the field took the green. Kiser jumped out to the lead at the drop of the flag as Gogg settled into second position. The field quickly spread out around the track and tight racing action could be seen throughout the pack. Two and three-wide racing had the fans on the edge of their seats as the laps were reeled off one-by-one with Kiser out front.

At the halfway point, Hench caught Kiser and took the lead. Cory Sparks was glued to Hench as the pass was made. Kiser settled into third just behind the leaders. Sparks hounded Hench in the closing laps of the race, but was never able to make a pass stick. At the end of 20 green flag laps, Hench grabbed the checkers followed by Sparks, Kiser, Gogg, and Harvey rounding out the top five.

The CNYMS tour will return to Skyline Raceway on Saturday, June 12th, but before that the series heads to Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, NY this Saturday night, May 29th. If time permits, CNYMS competitors will have time at the end of the program to test setups for the non-winged event scheduled at Black Rock on Friday, September 10th.
