Emhof grabs top 10 finish at Outlaw Mini Sprint Nationals.

Benton, MO - Mike Emhof and the rest of the Williamson, NY, based Branich Motorsports team battled back from disappointment in the preliminary round of the 2002 U. S. Outlaw Mini Sprint Association National Championships to score a top 10 finish in the championship feature.

Emhof powered his Pace Electronic Products/Heluva Good Foods mini sprinter to an 8th place finish in the 25-lap feature event at AutoTire and Parts Race Park in Benton, Missouri, on September 27th and 28th.

The pits of the 3/8-mile high-banked oval were crowded with over 30 teams from all over the United States and Canada. Emhof, and Matt and Doug Norrie (West Suffield, CT), represented the Central New York Mini Sprint (CNYMS) tour, and the trio battled teams from North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, California, Missouri, Kansas, and Montreal, Canada, in the two-day event.

The weekend did not start well for the Branich team, as Emhof caught the inner berm of the race surface during his Friday night qualifying heat race, severely damaging the front suspension. The team was able to repair the car in time for the B-main. Emhof finished high enough in the race to qualify for the preliminary feature, but his motor let loose at the end of the B-main. This eliminated the team from competition for the night.

The team brought out its second car for the Saturday night festivities, and the results were much different. After the four qualifying races were completed, Emhof had accumulated enough points to qualify for the feature, grabbing the sixteenth of 24 starting spots. During the caution filled feature, he methodically picked his way through slower cars, breaking into the top ten by the halfway point, and grabbing eighth at the checkered flag. Emhof was the highest CNYMS finisher in the feature event. The race was won by Californian Brad Sweet.

The team will wind up the 2002 season with a midweek mini sprint appearance at Utica-Rome Speedway on October 9th.
