McKENZIE, TN - J&J Sprint Cars continued to perform well on dirt tracks across the country last week. Andy Hillenburg won a Pennzoil World of Outlaws preliminary feature in Oregon while Lance Dewease led a one-two J&J finish in the WoO Gumout race at Williams Grove Speedway. Donny Goeden scored an IRA victory while Ed Lynch and Jimmy Hawley continued to run strong in Western Pennsylvania.
PENNZOIL WORLD OF OUTLAWS
Andy Hillenburg turned his fortunes around Friday when the World of Outlaws opened a double-feature event at Portland Speedway. He passed Jeff Shepard in turn four as they headed for the checkered flag to win his second Preliminary Feature of the season in his #2 Luxaire J&J.
"I feel pretty good tonight," Hillenburg said. "The last couple of tracks bounced me around pretty good, but tonight was smooth as glass and actually kind of slick. I'm feeling better every day. Another one of these (winner's trophies) will make me feel even better."
Hillenburg started making his way toward the front during the 10th lap moving past Dale Blaney, Craig Dollansky and Danny Wood to claim third on the 16th lap. Shepard appeared to have the race won when the white flag fell. But the determined Hillenburg caught him in turn three and threaded his #2 Luxaire J&J between Shepard and the inside berm in the fourth corner to pass him for the $5,000 victory.
WOO GUMOUT SERIES
Lance DeWease picked up his third World of Outlaws Gumout Series win of the season Friday night at the famous Williams Grove Speedway in Joe Harz's #88H J&J. Keith Kauffman drove the Middleswarth #7 J&J past early leader Chris Eash and took the lead on the 13th lap, but he couldn't hold off Dewease, who made his winning move on the 24th circuit and led the final six laps to collect the $5000 prize. Dewease and Kauffman were joined in the top five another J&J runner, Dave Ely, who finished fifth.
IRA
Donny Goeden emblazed his name in the record books on Friday night when the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series made the first ever sprint appearance at the Red Cedar Speedway in Menominee, WI. At the drop of the green, pole sitter Goeden drove the T&D Motorsports #27G J&J to the lead and managed to build up a sizable lead by the seventh lap. The battle of this race was for second as Goeden checked out and claimed the win.
ASCS
Four time series champion Terry Gray not only was saved by a late caution flag, but also learned where the fast portion of the track was located as he won the thrilling United Expressline American Sprint Car Series national tour feature as the series made their second and final appearance of the season at North Central Arkansas Speedway in Yellville, AR on Friday night
Gray started third in his #10 J&J and followed Larry Neighbors early in the 30-lap feature event. Gray used the low line while Neighbors ran the cushion as the two raced closely until Gray took the lead on lap five. Gray held the post for the next 20 laps until Neighbors found the middle groove to his liking and took the lead when Gray caught squeezed to the bottom. A caution flag nullified the pass and on the restart, Gray kept Neighbors behind him and scored the victory.
WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA
Lernerville
Ed Lynch Jr didn't need a "brake" to find his way to the Triangle Gasoline victory circle for the fifth time this season and he has now tied Lou Blaney for second (49 wins) in the Sprint All Time Record Book. Lynch, who had lost his brakes in his #2L Howard Concrete J&J, masterfully weaved his way through the field, passing race leader Kevin Schaeffer on lap 16. Jimmy Hawley finished second coming from 16th and claimed his third track championship in the Doc and Debbie Crawford #CIII J&J.
Mercer
Jimmy Hawley made it four in a row aboard the Dr. John and Debi Crawford-owned, Mihalcak Motorsports #CIII J&J on a lightning-quick, tacky track in the 20-lap Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Car feature. "We had the car a little too tight," said Hawley, following his 27th career win at Mercer. "We knew we were in a little bit of trouble because of some good cars up front and with the track being heavy, but it worked out for us."
Hawley's winning move came on the 16th circuit when he went to the inside of Troy Preston in turns one and two to make the pass stick. Once in front, Hawley pulled away for his sixth Mercer win and fifteenth overall of the season.
Other Notes:
John Pate won the feature event at Houston Raceway Park in his #36 J&J on Saturday Night. Jody Roland took the checkered flag in his J&J at Riverside Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. Fred Rahmer finished second at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday night in the Hamilton Motorsports #77 J&J, and Lance Dewease finished third in the WoO Gumout race at Port Royal Speedway.
