Minter Almost Qualifies for Laney Memorial

BAYTOWN, TX (May 19) -- Kathryne Minter almost qualified for Saturday's Sixth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial "A" Feature at Houston Raceway Park, finishing one position short in the "B" Feature.

Laney, who lived in Humble, TX, lost his life in a sprint car crash while leading the "B" Feature on opening night of the Fourth Annual King of the 360s event at East Bay Raceway in Tampa, FL, on January 30, 2002.

"We missed qualifying for the feature by one spot," Minter said. "We didn't get to run the heat race because our U-joint and driveshaft broke in hot laps. We spent the whole heat race getting the car ready for the 'B' main to try to qualify for the feature.

"We started at the very back of the 'B.' I passed four cars on the start, but they called it back because the guy on the outside pole didn't start. On the restart, I passed four cars again, but one (Kent Lewis Sr.) passed me back. I finished seventh, so I missed it by one spot."

Minter, who finished 14th in Friday's American Sprint Car Series Gulf South main event at Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, appeared to be one of the drivers to beat in the hot-lap session.

"The car was really fast, especially in hot laps," the 16-year-old driver of the #13m Concrete Crushing Company J&J said. "We were going really fast and, all of a sudden, it just broke. The drive shaft and all the parts flying up hit my foot. It hurt my foot a little bit, but it's not that bad. Somebody told me about a part that protects you from the driveshaft; I think I'm going to get one of those."

Minter will return to ASCS Gulf South competition Memorial Day weekend, racing at the Gator Motorplex in Willis Saturday and South Texas Motor Speedway in Corpus Christi Sunday.

"I've raced at Gator before, but not at the track in Corpus Christi," Kathryne said. "My fuel pump broke when I raced at Gator the last time, and that was really bad. It's a fast track. I also raced my mini-stock there. Hopefully, it will be better for us this time."
