AUGUST 18, 2000 - Veteran racer Roger Rager finally broke the streak of new winners in MSS competition when he pocketed his second consecutive victory at the Kopellah Speedway in St. Croix Falls, WI. Rager, who was piloting the Dale Wilson wrenched, Donahue Power Sports #6, also won his heat and the Justice Brothers-Gillund Enterprises Dash and now leads the MSS standings as the series heads into the final night of the season nest Friday at Kopellah.
Rager earned the pole of the feature by virtue of his late race pass in the dash over Tom Kamrath. The fellow front row starters immediately jumped out in front of the rest of the field and began to stretch their advantage. Meanwhile, Alan Gilbertson was moving through the field in his yellow #97 and quickly moved from 7th to 4th using the low line of the speedway. Midway through the race, Johnny Parsons III made contact with a tire on the inside of the speedway and pushed it onto the racing surface, thus requiring a yellow flag.
On the restart, Rager pulled away from Tom Kamrath and the third place machine of Spike Lempelius. The top three would finish in this order and were followed by Gilbertson and Gene Kelly, who rounded out the top 5 and registered his best run of the season. Following this group was John Nelson, MSS newcomer Mike Sargent, Joseph Kouba, Ehren Layton, and John Franzen.
The Midwest Sprintcar Series will wrap up their season next Friday, August 25th with their final trip to the Kopellah Speedway. The show scheduled at the Golden Spike Speedway in early September has been officially canceled by mutual consent. The MSS Banquet date will be announced as soon as it is available and please stay tuned to the MSS Website at www.gotomn.com/mss_sprints.html for details.
