ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/14/2002 - This Saturday night, July 20TH, Lincoln Speedway will once again honor two men who were a big part of the history of the Pigeon Hills oval - with the Annual Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn Sr. Memorial.

Gohn Sr. was a longtime car owner and sponsor, while his son Daryl was a winning driver at Lincoln and elsewhere in the Central Pennsylvania racing circuit. Both lost their lives in April of 1988.

In addition to the special memorial race itself that night, there will be an afternoon car show with free food and drinks, loads of giveaway prizes that night, and much more...

GLENN GOHN SR.

Glenn Gohn Sr. began making his mark on the Lincoln Speedway record books when he began sponsoring the legendary Bobby Abel back in the early 1960's.

A war veteran who lost the use of his legs while serving his country, Gohn built a successful Jewelry business, and the name of Gohn Jewelers became well known in the local area because of Glenn's love of racing.

During his years of sponsoring Bobby Abel, Gohn watched as his car won numerous races here at Lincoln and elsewhere in the local area. Abel gave Gohn Jeweler's numerous championships here at Lincoln and at places like Susquehanna and Dorsey Maryland as well.

When Abel decided to step down from racing, Gohn wanted to keep in the sport, and he became a car owner. Invader Roger Rager was one of his first drivers, and later Gohn hooked up with Bobby Weaver for another winning combination.

Like Abel, Weaver kept the Gohn name in the spotlights. Weaver again put Gohn in victory lane, and the track titles at Lincoln and Susquehanna kept coming his way.

Another thing that happened was that Glenn's sons decided to try their hand at racing. First Glenn Gohn Jr. took a few rides in his father's back up cars, and then younger son Daryl Gohn began his own driving career.

It was on April 3, 1988 that Glenn Gohn Sr. passed away, and local auto racing lost a true friend. Glenn Gohn Sr. was inducted into the York County Racing Club's Hall of Fame in January of 1998.

DARYL GOHN

Daryl Gohn was basically raised in a racing environment. With Gohn Sr. being so involved in racing it was just natural that Daryl would want to be a race driver himself.

While his career as a driver was cut short by his fatal accident at Williams Grove Speedway, Daryl had made his mark on the local circuit. Daryl was a winner both at Lincoln and at Williams Grove during his brief career.

Gohn Sr.'s passing deeply affected Daryl as he and his father were always very close. Daryl had taken over the reins of the family jewelry business, and was continuing the family name in racing.

It was just 20 days after his father passed away that Daryl's life was cut short when he suffered fatal injuries in a crash during a heat race at Williams Grove on April 23, 1988.

KEEPING THE TRADITION

Glenn Gohn Jr. and his wife Joanne, along with his sister Robin and their mother have kept the Gohn family tradition alive in racing with races in honor of Glenn Sr. and Daryl each year at Lincoln.

The management at Lincoln is honored once again to have the Gohn family with them again for the Annual Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn Sr. Memorial Race.

In addition, that same afternoon, there will be a car show featuring the sprints, late models, and thundercars. From 2 to 4 PM, in the Lincoln Speedway parking lot, several drivers and there cars will be on display for to see and meet. The drivers will be available for pictures and autographs. Also, for those who attend the car show there will be free hot dogs, sodas, and chips - all donated by various local sponsors.

That night, over 65 prizes will be given away - items such as hats, shirts, Hershey tickets, local restaurant gift certificates, Baltimore Oriole Tickets, coolers, die cast cars and much more. Also, a special checkered flag will be given away which will be autographed by all the drivers that night.

So come out and enjoy the racing action this Saturday afternoon and night, July 20TH, at Lincoln Speedway...but please take a few moments to remember these two men who made a big impact on local racing.
