Lincoln Speedway Results 1999-07-31

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/31/99 - "Boy it sure is hot and the beer is sure going to taste good." So said Cris Eash after the first of two feature wins at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Eash came from his 10th starting position to pass Jesse Wentz for the lead on lap ten and then out-raced nine-time winner Fred Rahmer in lapped traffic for his fourth Lincoln win of the year. His margin of victory in the 25-lap Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn Sr. Super Sprint Memorial was 1.79 seconds.

"That was some car tonight," exclaimed Eash upon exiting his sprinter in victory lane, "We made a bunch of changes. This is a new car, we changed some things around and are trying some stuff, and it seemed to work good tonight. We’ve been fortunate. This is our third Gohn Memorial (win).

The win, Eash's fifth overall in 1999, was the 26th of his career win at Lincoln. All totaled, Eash picked-up $2,710 for the win plus an additional $630 in lap money for a total of $3,340 dollars for his effort.

"That’s awesome," Eash added when told he won over $3,300 in prize money for winning and leading 16 laps, "We’ve been struggling here the last month and we needed something to turn this deal around."

"The track was good and slick tonight and we found a good set-up for a slick track, so things worked out great for us tonight."

"I kind of lucked out in the heat race," Eash added. "Until that last tangle in the last corner we were not in a qualified spot to start towards the front...I guess their misfortune was my fortune. I’ve got to thank Shawn Norris and Wayne Bull, those guys work real hard...my dad, T.A.R. Auto Body, Maryland Industrial Coaters,

E & G Classics, if it were not for these people we wouldn’t be standing up here."

Outside front row starter Bill Brian Jr. grabbed the lead over polesitter Jimmy McBee at the drop of the green and paced the field for the first two laps before fourth-starting Jesse Wentz took over the top spot heading into the third turn on the third lap.

Meanwhile Eash, who started eighth, was quickly working his way to the front and got around Brian for second place in the third and fourth turns of the sixth lap. Eash quickly closed onto Wentz’s bumper as they headed into lapped traffic on the ninth lap and then made his race-winning move coming off the second turn on the 10th lap.

Nine-time Lincoln winner Fred Rahmer made his run to the front from his 12th starting position and moved past Wentz for second place following a 23rd lap caution restart. But Eash was strong this night, and opened up a 1.22 second lead as the white flag waved.

Donnie Kreitz Jr. came on strong from his 12th starting position to finish third, with early race leader Wentz fourth and Steve Siegel fifth. Completing the top 10 were Danny Jones, Johnny Mackison Jr., Dave Ely, Brian Montieth and Shawn Weaver.

Heats for the 27 super sprints on hand were won by McBee, Wentz and Rahmer, with Montieth winning the consolation.

Eash then nursed the Leach family #30e to his fifth Lincoln win of the season in the "358" sprint feature. "The motor lost a cylinder on about the fifth lap, and it kept getting worse as the race went along," said Eash after pulling the double, "Fortunately, the track was slick enough that it didn’t matter." It was the seventh Lincoln win in nine ‘99 events for the Leach racing team. (Darren Eash won both features at Lincoln while subbing for Cris during the July 4th weekend.) Cris has won five times in six appearances in the division this year, and has finished in the top five all six times.

Leading the first eight laps and finishing several car lengths behind was Greg Leiby, with Gary Gollub (who started 14th) third, Kevin McNew (who started 15th) fourth, and Doug Esh (who came from the back after an early race spin) fifth.

Heats for the 30 358 Sprints on hand were won by Bill Fannasy, Elmer Stoltzfus and Bob Hagan, with Mike Lehman winning the consolation.

K.T. Shaw became the 13th different winner of the year in the 20-lap thundercar championship event. He started eighth and took the lead from Greg Feltch on lap 13. He was able to steer clear of several crashes, including a 9-car melee on the third turn during the ninth lap. That crash blocked the track and delayed the remainder of the event for several minutes, and took out the cars running third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth. Finishing second was Mike Zeigler, with Neil Smith, David Prunkl, and Kenny Slaybaugh completing the top five.

Heats for the 35 thundercars on hand were won by Shaw, Zeigler, Duane Watson and Bernie Beard. Twin consolations were won by Cork Laughman and Jim Rost.
