SHAFFER CLAIMS FIRST ‘99 LINCOLN WIN; Leiphart wins limited late model feature; Clabaugh tops thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/14/99 - Millerstown’s Todd Shaffer may not get to Lincoln Speedway often, but when he does he makes it count.

Shaffer passed race-long leader Jesse Wentz in the first and second turns following on a sixth-lap caution restart and led the rest of the way to pick up his first Lincoln Speedway victory of 1999 in the 25-lap super sprint feature Saturday night.

Shaffer weathered several challenges from Wentz during the middle stages of the race and outdistanced himself from eventual second place finisher Todd Gracey by 3.22 seconds at the checkered.

"I’ll tell you what, Freddie (Rahmer) and Cris (Eash), they run up a lot of wins down here in a year and they earn them," Shaffer said upon exiting his sprinter in victory lane, "Jesse Wentz was going good and there at the end I saw Gracey and Cris were up there."

"I like coming down here," Shaffer said. "I don’t like coming down here when it looks like it’s going to rain out, but Don Leiby told me it wasn’t going to rain out and so we came down. We ran through rain the whole way. Lincoln did a great job getting this show in."

"I said to my crew, we’re here, let’s race," Shaffer said with a smile, "I’ ve got to give the grader man (Fred Putney) a lot of credit. If the other speedways had a guy like that...with what he did tonight and cut it off... it was beautiful - it couldn’t have been better."

Shaffer was referring to the hard shower which hit the speedway just as warm-ups were about to begin. The rain delayed the start of the show by an hour.

Shaffer’s eighth overall win of the year and his third career win at Lincoln was worth $2,500.

"I don’t know how many times Jesse and I went back by each other...he sort of got robbed on that yellow when he had passed me back. We were a little tight early and got better as we got going, but it would have been hard passing him if they wouldn’t have put him back."

Shaffer referred to Wentz’s pass to reclaim the lead exiting the second turn of lap nine. But the move was negated when a caution came out before the lap was over for Ed Fischl. Wentz showed Shaffer his nose a few times after that, but was never able to recapture the lead.

"It’s so easy to put flyers on right now," Shaffer added. "You just have to sort of guess and block for a lap or two until you can get back up on top...the last five laps was the best my car was all night so I want to thank my crew and all the money people that make this possible."

Todd Gracey caught Wentz in turns three and four following a 13th-lap restart, and Cris Eash moved past Wentz for third a lap later. Shaffer extended his lead in lapped traffic over the final five laps, with Gracey, Eash, and Wentz following in order across the line. Fifth place went to Steve Siegel, with consolation winner Donnie Kreitz, Jr., Dave Ely, Curt Michael, Cliff Brian, and Darren Eash (driving his first race in the new Rick and Tommy Roth/Accurate Binding No.7E team) completing the top ten.

Heats for the 30 super sprints on hand were won by Chris Knopp, Shaffer and Wentz, with Donnie Kreitz Jr. winning the consolation.

Mt. Wolf’sJeffm Leiphart out dueled Daryl Burkholder to claim the 20-lap limited late model feature. Leiphart started third, grabbed the lead from Burkholder on the tenth lap, and outran Burkholder and Jim Bernheisel to the finish. The racing was so close that Burkholder was actually scored the leader of lap 18 and Bernheisel passed Burkholder for second on the final lap. Leiphart’s final margin of victory was .41 seconds. Jim Shuttlesworth and Scott McCann completed the top give.

The limited late models, a regular division at nearby Silver Spring Speedway, also came to race. All 24 of the starters finished.

Heats for the 31 Silver Spring limited late models on hand were won by Bernheisel, Leiphart and Shuttlesworth, with Bernie Beard winning the consolation and finishing a respectable seventh.

Steve Clabaugh, scheduled to start tenth, took the green from the outside of the front row after several aborted attempts to start the race, and went on the win the 15-lap thundercar feature. Clabaugh followed Mike Zeigler for the first four laps before making the pass for lead. He paced the field the rest of the way for his second ‘99 Lincoln win. Zeigler, Neil Smith, Bobby Beard, and Bernie Beard completed the top five.

Heats for the 32 thundercars on hand were won by Mike Ciezobka, Clabaugh and Zeigler, with Ken Berwager winning the consolation.
