ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/2/00 - York's Johnny Mackison Jr. ended a seven-year absence from victory lane in dramatic fashion in winning the special 30-lap Bobby Abel Memorial at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. Mackison, who returned to sprint car racing after leaving for stock cars a few years, ended 13-time Lincoln Speedway winner Fred Rahmer's four-race win streak in one of the most exciting races of the season. Mackison, who had led since the 10th lap, lost the lead to Rahmer at the start-finish line to complete the 27th lap. He then drove hard in under the newly crowned track champion entering the first turn, slid up the track, and tried to out-race the Salfordsville speedster to the exit of the turn. With neither driver leaving off the gas, contact was made between the leaders, sending Rahmer hard into the outside concrete wall exiting the turn - thus ending his bid for a fifth win in-a-row. "It's about seven years since I won a race and man it feels good," said an outwardly happy Mackison in victory lane. "I really didn't mean to have it happen like that, but I'll take it any way I can get it." "Fred Rahmer is the best there is here and he got by me," Mackison added upon exiting his Floyd and Joyce Swope No.65 sprinter. "I didn't try to do that, but that was strictly racing. We were running hard and I was trying to put as much ground between us as I could...it's just one of them things." Polesitter Josh Wells grabbed the lead at the outset with outside frontrow starter Jeremy Trout in tow. Third-starting Glenndon Forsythe moved around Trout into second on the third lap as Wells pulled out to a 1.76 second lead. Meanwhile Mackison, who started ninth, was quickly moving through the field and passed Trout on the sixth lap into third place. Enola's Billy Sims slowed on the frontstretch to bring out the caution on the eighth lap. On the restart, Mackison quickly got by Forsythe to move into second place as Rahmer and Cris Eash moved into third and fourth. A Trout spin in the fourth turn brought out the caution on the 10th lap, putting Mackison onto the leader's bumper for the restart. Mackison was able to get by Wells for the lead in the third and fourth turns on the 10th lap and began to pull away from the field. He opened up a 2.08-second lead by the time Rahmer got past Wells for second place on the 17th lap. Rahmer closed onto Mackison's bumper in lapped traffic on the 22nd lap, with Mackison able to hold his ground against the 97-time Lincoln winner. The red then came out on lap 27 for a Dave Cook rollover in the second turn which also involved Josh Wells and John Garrett, setting up the three-lap shootout between Mackison and Rahmer. On the restart, Rahmer was able to pull alongside Mackison, and was actually scored the leader of lap 27. But Mackison was not going down without a fight, driving hard into the first and second turns, leading to the contact with Rahmer. The right side of Rahmer's car climbed the outside wall before he dropped back down onto the track and came to a stop ending his night. "Without the Swopes and Jeff Brown working on the car and all the guys on the crew this wouldn't be possible," said Mackison. "They had faith in me when we wanted to come back and stuck with us and now we're finally here." "You have to know Fred's always there," said Mackison when asked if he knew Rahmer was behind him. "I just tried to make the right moves and at the end I just said I'd hang on and see what happens." "Jeff Brown has got us real consistent," said Mackison on his head mechanic Jeff Brown. "I can't say enough about the Swopes. We have some good equipment, but not a lot of it. This motor is getting tired and it's the only one we have right now. We've gotten to where we are a top-five car and we were trying to find the next level, and we finally got it together." Mackison's win, the fourth of his Lincoln career, was worth $3,000 plus $1,025 in extra lap and heat money. "I'd like to dedicate this win to Frankie Thompson," said Mackison on last week's passing of one of the great racers of the 50's and 60's, "He was a good friend of ours and we're really going to miss him." Cris Eash assumed second when Rahmer dropped from the field and finished a half-second behind, with Steve Siegel crossing third, Jimmy McBee fourth, and Jesse Wentz fifth. Sixth through tenth were Glenndon Forsythe, Niki Young, Brook Weibley, Greg Klar, Josh Wells. Heats for the 23 super sprinters on hand were won by Eash, Mackison, and Siegel.

East Berlin's Eric Stambaugh claimed his first career Lincoln win the 20-lap 358 sprint main, after holding off Doug Esh in a wild finish that ended with Esh turning his car onto its side on the final lap. Stambaugh, who started 12th, grabbed the lead from Danny Warrick on a 11th lap restart that followed a red flag for a Bob Camilli flip on the second turn that also involved Mike Rabold. Stambaugh led the rest of the way, but suffered tire problems and dropped off the pace in the third and fourth turns of the final two laps. The final time around, Stambaugh also slowed for the spinning #55E of Brian Eichelberger. Esh, who started 13th, tried to drive around both cars and struck the outside wall exiting the fourth turn. That set up a one-lap dash to the finish, with Stambaugh crossing 1.10 seconds ahead of Todd Reed at the finish. Darren Eash also struck the outside wall on the frontstretch earlier in the race, but recovered to finish third, with Dan Dietrich and early-race leader Danny Warrick finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Heats for the 43 limited sprints on hand were won by Gary Gollub, Danny Jones, Alan Krimes, and Camilli. Twin consolations were won by Tim Hershey and Kevin Welsh.

Shenendoah, Virginia's Rick Utsman won his second straight Lincoln fall INEX Legends race by leading every lap. Brian Levan, spring INEX Legends Lincoln winner Tim Tomson, Butch Brough, and Blane Gundrum completed the top five. INEX Legend heats were won by Gundrum, Rick Utsman, and Tomson, with Ed Wentz winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, September 9th, the super sprints will take the night off at the Pigeon Hills. That allows the 358 sprints to take center stage with a special championship race. They will be joined by the micro-sprints and thundercars. Gates will open at 5 PM, with racing action getting underway at 7:30 PM.
