LANCE DEWEASE WINS DARYL GOHN/GLENN GOHN SR. MEMORIAL; David Prunkl Drives to Thundercar Championship Win; Last Lap Pass Nets Jeff Leiphart Late Model Win

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/21/01 - Sometimes you just need to go back with what works. Fayettville's Lance Dewease, not happy with his new car, decided to pull old reliable for the Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn Sr. Memorial for sprint cars at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night and drove to his third victory of the season at the Pigeon Hill's oval.

Dewease charged from his 12th starting spot into fourth by the seventh lap and then capitalized on race-leader Craig Keel's misfortune of a flat right front tire and a mechanical problem on third place Fred Rahmer's sprinter, both on the 21st lap, to move into second behind Cris Eash with five laps to go.

On the restart Dewease shot under the Hanover speedster entering the third turn and slid up in front at the exit of turn four to grab the lead on the 21st lap and then drove away to his 14th career win at the Pigeon Hills oval in the $2,500-to-win Gohn Memorial.

"We've got our cars working pretty decent right now," said Dewease upon exiting his Joe Harz-owned No.88H sprinter in victory lane. "This is an old car we put back together...we parked it after Speedweeks and were not real happy with the new one, so we put an old one back together and it's going pretty decent."

"I didn't think this place got crowds like this on Saturday night," Dewease added as the Lincoln fans cheered. "I raced against Daryl Gohn, but I never raced against his dad. This means a lot to win this race."

"I would like to thank the whole Gohn family for supporting this deal the way they do. Daryl was a heck of a good racer..it's a tragedy when we lose somebody like that. When it's your turn, it's you're turn. If I go that way in a race car, my wife and none of us will feel bad for me. It's what I love to do."

A spin by third-starting Brian Monieth in the third and fourth turns at the start of the feature brought out a quick caution. The complete restart then saw polesitter Keel and his fellow frontrow starter Cliff Brian exchange the lead over the first lap with Brian edging in front with one lap in the books. Keel then charged in front of the Ephrata racer on the second lap and as ninth-starting Cris Eash powered quickly into third. Eash then got around Brian into the runner-up spot on the fourth lap.

Meanwhile, Rahmer was also making a fast charge through the field, and, following a red flag for a Steve Siegel flip entering the third turn, slipped by Darren Eash into fourth place by the end of the fourth lap, and then around Brian on the fifth lap to take away third.

12th-Starting Dewease took up the chase as well and moved around Brian into fourth place by the seventh lap.

From there, the top-four cars of Keel, Eash, Rahmer, and Dewease sliced there way through lapped traffic and remained in that order through the 19th lap. The only stoppage of action during that time was a caution for Johnny Mackison Jr. who came to a stop in turn four on the 13th lap.

But on the 20th lap the fifth place car of Bobby Weaver tangled with the slower car of Stacey Eastwood in the first and second turns. The leaders attempted to slip by the accident scene as the caution flag waved with the race leader banging into the outside wall in the first and second turn, ending the Weedsport, New York driver's bid for a second Lincoln win. As the sprinters slowed for the caution, Rahmer then surprisingly ducked into the pits for an unrelated mechanical problem (a missing radius rod bolt) setting up a five lap dash to the checkered with Cris Eash now in the lead and Dewease moving up into second.

On the restart Dewease immediately began to pressure Cris Eash for the lead and pulled along side as they completed the 20th lap.

Dewease and Eash ran side-by-side until Dewease shot his sprinter under, and then up, in front of Eash exiting the fourth turn to move into the lead.

"We caught a lucky break there with Keel and Fred (Rahmer)," said the victorious Dewease in victory lane. "I don't know what happened to Fred there, he looked pretty good. But something happened to him."

"I was slowly working the bottom and gained on Fred and Keel when they were racing," said Dewease. "I didn't know where he was going...but I made up my mind that where-ever he was going I was going in the opposite direction."

"He (Eash) came down and I got a good run around the top and just gave him a slider in turns three and four. Then I kind of used up the race track those last four or five laps."

Dewease led the final laps to pick-up the victory for his 11th overall win in the 2001 local racing season.

"We made a decision last week to run here," said Dewease. "The other track we run at wasn't real good, and Fred Putney always does good job here on the track...at the beginning of the night it looked like it was going to stay pretty wet, but it got pretty slick. Actually we could move around a good bit on it."

"I always did go pretty good her, on and off," Dewease said. "Over the winter we worked on our short-track program because that was one area last year we were hurting...these cars are working good on short tracks now."

"I need to thank Hank's Performance Products, Karl Harz Furniture, American Racing tires , J&J Chassis, Don Ott Engines, Top flight Wings...And I need to thank Don and Bob Leibey and Alan Kreitzer because they've treated us like we were here all year long. One thing about coming here is that they treat you fair. And I've got to thank the fans for coming out."

Cris Eash settled for second, with Todd Gracey in the Bill and Kay Tanger No.07 sprinter in third, Darren Eash fourth, and Montieth rebounding from his opening lap spin to come from the rear to finish fifth.

Completing the top-10 were Chris Knopp, Niki Young, Mackison, Brian, and Rahmer.

Heats for the 26 super sprinters on hand were won by Keel, Rahmer, and Brian, with Glenndon Forsythe winning the consolation.

Sykesville Maryland's David Prunkl grabbed the lead over polesitter Cork Laughman at the drop of the green to the special 20-lap Thundercar Championship race and held on the rest of the way despite constant pressure to register his second win of the season.

Two-time 2001 winner Craig Wagaman drove around Laughman into second on the fourth lap and waited for Prunkl to give him an opening. Defending two-time thundercar champ Bobby Beard moved up into third and Mike Ziegler Jr. into fourth with five laps to go.

Exiting the fourth turn with the white flag waving Wagaman tried to sneak under Prunkl, resulting in contact. Wagaman quickly slowed entering the first and second turns with a flat right front tire to bring out the caution and setting up a wild one lap dash to the checkered.

Prunkl rose to the occasion and he stayed out in front the final lap to register his fourth career Lincoln Speedway win.

A wild scramble ensued right behind the winner in the final turns to the checkered with Bobby Beard drifting high, opening the door for fourth-running Steve Clabaugh to slip into second. Zeigler Jr. followed Clabaugh through as well to finish third, with Neil Smith fourth, and Bobby Rudisill fifth.

Completing the top-10 were Laughman, Bernie Beard, Tony Kuhn, Bobby Beard, and Chet McCormick.

Heats for the 29 thundercars were won by Prunkl, Craig Wagaman, and Laughman, with Bryan Wagaman winning the consolation.

They say that only the final lap counts.

York's Jeff Liephart waited until the final lap to make his move for the win in the 20 lap Limited Late Model contest and came away with his first win of the 2001 season in the process.

Outside frontrow starter Kory Sites grabbed the lead over polesitter Larry Baer at the drop of the green. Two-time Lincoln winner Jason Covert was looking to make it three wins-in-row (dating back to last year) as he slipped by Sites for the lead on the fifth lap.

Leiphart moved around Sites into the runner-up spot at the halfway point and stuck to the leader's bumper as they traveled into traffic in the closing laps. As the white flag waved, a large group of slower cars loomed ahead, with Leiphart pulling along side of Covert in the battle for the lead.

Leiphart was able to drive around Covert exiting the final turn to the checkered for the win. Covert settled for second, with Scott McCann, Bud Witmer, and Sites finishing third through fifth respectively.

Heats for the 33 limited late models on hand were won by Baer, Sites, and Leiphart, with Jake Lettick winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, July 28th, it will be YORK COUNTY RACING CLUB NIGHT featuring all three regular divisions in action - the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Super Sprints, the Budweiser/Motorsports Monthly 358 Sprints and the Miller Brothers Chevrolet Thundercars. Gates will open at 5:30 PM, with hot laps at 7 PM and racing action getting under way at 7:30 PM.
