Lincoln Speedway results 2004-06-19

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/19/04 - The fact that Fred Rahmer did not win at Lincoln Speedway in 2003 is more amazing in 2004 than it was last year. Fast Freddie took another step toward making his winless streak a distant memory by adding to his 2004 winning streak in the Pigeon Hills Saturday night.

Rahmer claimed his fourth straight win and his seventh checkered flag of the season in the 25-lap 410 sprint feature, coming from ninth starting spot to second by the end of the fourth lap and catching Brian Leppo for the race lead in lapped traffic on the tenth circuit.

After four attempts to start the race, Leppo looked to be the man to beat. He charged from his eighth starting spot to the race lead by the end of the second lap. He rode the cushion through turns three and four to pass Australian driver Peter Attard and drove away to a 1.70-second lead by the time the first caution came out for a spinning Phil Weinsteiger in turn two.

At the time, Rahmer was fourth, with defending track champ Lance Dewease fifth.

"He had the outside row and that was the hot set-up tonight," said Rahmer on Leppo's quick start. "We were all waiting for the big crash...we were lucky."

On the fourth lap restart, Attard faded, allowing Rahmer to slip from fourth to second, keeping Weaver in third. By lap five, Leppo had built a 1.48-second lead, but Rahmer reeled the Spring Grove speedster in over the next four laps as they threaded their way through lapped traffic. Rahmer's race-winning pass was a familiar slider in turns three and four of lap ten.

"He can definitely drive the car around here fast, but he doesn't has as much time here as I do," explained Rahmer. "Eventually it will be his turn, but I'm not going to lie down and die."

Rahmer quickly opened up breathing room between himself and Leppo, leaving Leppo to battle Dewease for the runner-up spot over the final five laps. Dewease finally claimed second with two laps to go.

Rahmer cruised to a .94-second $2,500 win over Dewease, his 129th at Lincoln and fifth win in the last six Lincoln features.

"We've been good all year and very fortunate. All the support we get from Miller Brothers and Material Handling Systems...so many people, it's incredible. We have such a good group of people. Nobody ever complains. These Don Ott Engines are really running good, so we'll just see if we can keep on winning."

"It's hard to make it a five-race win streak...it sort of works against you, the odds" said Rahmer on going after five wins in-a-row in next week's Pennsylvania Speedweek Opener at Lincoln Speedway. "We got some good momentum...they told me Lance was pretty good on the bottom, and I felt pretty good down there, but it was easier to run around the top."

"We'll see next week. The whole deal is to come and win. We'll just keep coming and do the best we can."

Leppo settled for third, with Greg Hodnett fourth, and Brian Montieth coming from the rear after suffering a flat tire on one of the starts to cross fifth. Sixth through tenth were Doug Esh, Jim Siegel, Cris Eash (who also came from the back after a spin on one of the aborted starts), Weaver, and Kenny Jacobs (who also came from the back after a crash).

"Tonight we were junk in the heat, but the guys fixed the car up and had it good for the feature," added Rahmer. "Timmy (Elwell) did a really good job, and the VRP Shocks, we tried something different again tonight and it was pretty good...we'll just see what happens next week."

Heats for the 27 "410" sprinters were won by Doug Rohrbaugh, Leppo and Weaver, with Montieth winning the consolation event.

Far Hills, New Jersey's Kevin Welsh started on the outside of row one and led wire-to-wire in the 25-lap United Racing Club feature, besting Jon Eldreth by 2.15 seconds, who ran second the whole way. The best racing was for third on back, with Dave Ely holding off guest driver Kenny Jacobs for third and points leader Curt Michael completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Kramer Williamson, Sean Michael, Cliff Brian, Brian Seidel, and Justin Collett.

Heats for the 30 URC Sprinters were won Collett, JJ Grasso and Eldreth, with Sean Michael winning the B-Main.

Sykesville, Maryland's David Prunkl won in only his second time out this year in the 20-lap thundercar feature. Prunkl started on the pole, followed Jim Martz, Jr. the first lap, then led the final 19 in claiming his eighth career win in the Pigeon Hills. He became the 10th different winner in 17 thundercar features this season.

Mike Zeigler, Sr. closed the gap on his son for the points lead with a second-place finish .44 seconds behind Prunkl, with Martz crossing third, Bernie Beard finishing fourth, and Dan Zechman completing the top five.

Heats for the 26 thundercars were won by Prunkl, Nat Tuckey and Doug Devilbiss..

Next Saturday night, June 26th, Lincoln Speedway kicks off the Annual Pennsylvania Speedweek Series with the 5th running of the Kevin Gobrecht Memorial. The thundercars will round out the evening's racing action with time trials getting underway at 7:30 PM. Gates will open at 5:30 PM.
