ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/3/04 - It was like old times at Lincoln - a Dietrich in victory lane.

The family patriarch, Dan Dietrich, started on the pole and led the first 15 laps of the 20-lap 358 sprint feature. But it was his son, second generation racer Billy Dietrich, who stole the show.

Charging through the field from his 11th starting position into second by the 15th lap, Billy set his sights on his father for a dramatic family showdown over the final five laps.

But in just as dramatic fashion, the elder Dietrich's sprinter suddenly slowed in the third and fourth turns of the 16th lap, bringing out the caution and handing the lead over to his son.

"My titanium drive shaft broke," quipped Dan when he came to congratulate Billy in victory lane on Central Maryland Pools Night. Both Dietrichs were disqualified after finishing one-two in the KARS race at Port Royal last weekend when it was discovered that they were using titanium drive shafts. (For the record, Dietrich's drive shaft was not titanium Saturday night.)

"I didn't know what to think," exclaimed Billy, "I almost ran into him! We almost both didn't finish."

From there, Billy Dietrich easily led the final five laps to register his first win of the year at Lincoln Speedway. Billy took the checkered 5.58-seconds ahead of one-time2004 winner Aaron Long for his third career 358 sprint win at Lincoln. He collected $1,000 for his efforts.

"This track's great when it's like this," said Dietrich, "We don't get that many opportunities when the 410 guys run it off. Fred (Putney) and the whole Lincoln Speedway does a great job here. I was a little worried the first couple laps 'cause we couldn't get going. But we got thinned out and I just put 'er up against the boards and kept 'er to the floor."

Touche.

Mike Lehman started ninth and finished third, with Judd Shepard and Ken Berwager completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were points leader Chad Trout (who came from 20th starting spot), Brian Eichelberger, Bobby Howard, Brad McClelland, and Keith Prutzman.

Heats for the 41 "358 Sprint" heats were won by Dan Dietrich, Howard, Billy Dietrich and Long. Twin consolations were won by Alan Krimes and Michael Creaghan.

Mechanicsburg's Bob Gutshall drove by April 24th winner Jim Wentz to take the lead on the backstretch of lap five and drove away to victory in the 20-lap "305" sprint feature. Cowboy Jim Kennedy drove around Wentz for the runner-up spot two laps later, and ran second the rest of the way. The race was slowed by six cautions and one red flag for Casey Cook, who flipped on turn three of the ninth lap but was uninjured.

Gutshall, a former super sportsman driver, crossed .69-seconds ahead of Kennedy, with Wentz third, Scott Ellerman advancing from 14th to finish fourth, and Randy Kaylor completing the top five.

Heats for the 30 "305 Sprint" heats were won by Jim Moffitt Jr., Tommy Beavers and Joe Zap, with Gary Heckman winning the consolation.

Spring Grove's Jim Martz, Jr. claimed his first career win in the 20-lap thundercar feature. Martz, who started on the pole, led the first three laps before yielding to fourth-starting David Prunkl. Prunkl led the next four laps before getting together with Duane Watson, who had moved into the runner-up spot the lap before. That put Prunkl to the rear, and Watson joined him for rough riding. Martz assumed the lead for the restart , a lead he never relinquished despite heavy pressure from Nat Tuckey and Dan Zechman over the last several laps, including a wild scramble off the final turn to the checkered. Martz's scant .16-second victory made him the 12th different winner in 19 thundercar features this season, and, became the fourth-straight first-time 2004 winner.

Tuckey and Zechman finished second and third, followed by Chet McCormick and points leader Mike Zeigler, Jr. Completing the top-10 were Mike Zeigler Sr, Mike Walls, Watson, Roy Warehime and Prunkl.

Heats for the 23 thundercars were won by Tuckey, Zeigler Sr. and Prunkl.

Next Saturday night, July 10th, it will be Kids Night at Lincoln Speedway with the 410 Sprint and Thundercar regulars making up the two-division show.

Racing action gets underway at 7:30 PM, with gates opening at 5:30 PM.
