Jacobs Claims Gohn Memorial Win At Lincoln; Stambaugh preps for double duty Wednesday night with 358 sprint win; Wagaman wins rain-shortened thundercar feature

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/17/04 - There were two number 22s in victory lane at the end of the Annual Gohn Memorial for the 410 sprints at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. One was the restored Gohn Jewelers car. The other was the J&S Fabrication number 22 sprinter driven by winner Kenny Jacobs.

It was the second straight year the Jim and Sandy Kline sprinter was in victory lane for the Gohn Memorial. Last year it was Darren Eash making a late race pass on Chappy Knaack to claim the win.

And was only fitting that a yellow #22 was back again.

"I never knew Daryl, but I'm sure everyone on this crew did know him. I'm just happy I could bring this home for them," said Jacobs over the huge ovation that greeted him in victory lane.

The all-time winningest All Star now racing regularly in Central Pennsylvania started fourth and drove around polesitter Dan Shetler to move into second by the end of the first lap. He took the lead from Jeff Busby as the two raced into lapped traffic on turns three and four of lap five. Once in the lead, Jacobs pulled away to a huge lead as the race went non-stop over the first-of course--22 laps. His lead was a full two and-a-half seconds over points leader Fred Rahmer when the red came out for a fire in the #6W of Josh Wells on the backstretch of the 23rd lap. The fire extinguished itself and Wells was not injured, but the red had already come out.

The big lead placed four lapped cars between Jacobs and 12th-starting Rahmer for the restart, but one car opted for the rear and another car went to the pits. Jacobs left early on the restart, and Rahmer pulled alongside the #22 once the caution was waved to reassemble the field.

"That doggone number 88 had me shaking," said Jacobs, "He's been unbelievable right now...I know we won the race, but I don't think we could have started behind him and beat him. I'm just glad to be here. I didn't know if I could ever win a race here. I just talked to my brother this week and said, 'You know, I just don't know how in the hell I'm going to beat Fred Rahmer at Lincoln."

On the second attempt to restart, Rahmer cleared the lapped traffic, but couldn't catch Jacobs, who scored his third career win in the Pigeon Hills. The final margin of victory was .81 seconds.

Brian Montieth came from eighth starting spot to finish third, with Busby fourth and former Gohn Jewelers driver Bobby Weaver (who won two track titles with the Gohns) fifth. Completing the top ten were Lance Dewease, Greg Hodnett, Cris Eash, Jim Siegel, and Niki Young. Eric Stambaugh won the hard charger award of $500 from J&J Installations in York after advancing from 23rd starting spot to 12th at the finish.

Despite his many significant career wins, Jacobs saluted both the competitors and fans of Central Pennsylvania.

"Every race I win in Pennsylvania is like winning an Outlaw race for me, because no body else can come here and beat them," exclaimed Jacobs, "Whenever I get the opportunity to win one here, I feel like I've done something really good in my career. I mean, these guys know the race tracks, they all have the best damn motors, the best race cars, and they all have super owners. But they don't have one better than I have in Jim and Sandy Kline."

"Moon Byers is an awesome mechanic," Jacobs continued, "We have a lot of fun back at the shop. .I never saw such a cut-up! When we worked on the 77 car I couldn't get two words out of him. I thought he was stuck up as hell. But he's not stuck up, he just had a lot of pressure on him. He's just the greatest guy I could meet. I just have the most awesome crew here. It's a heck of a long drive in here, but they make it fun every time I come. Win, lose, or draw, they still make it fun."

"I was cheering pretty hard myself when I took the checkered," Jacobs added after being told of the popular win with the fans, "Pennsylvania has the most awesome fans...they all have there own driver, that's a good thing, and they all stick up for their drivers when the Outlaws come in. Even if it's not their favorite driver, if a Pennsylvania driver wins, they are definitely behind him. I traveled all over. I've been to Australia, California... everywhere...and I don't think I've been anywhere where the fans are so loyal to their race cars."

Heats for the 25 "410" Sprinters were won by Shetler, Busby and Brook Weibley.

Eric Stambaugh came from 14th starting spot to claim the win in his first race of the year in the 358 sprint division. In doing so, he became the seventh different winner in as many races in that class at Lincoln this year. Stambaugh, who won his first career 410 sprint feature as Susquehanna Speedway Park on Thursday night, was actually shaking down the car for this coming Wednesday night's Mid Summer Championship for both the 410's and 358's. Counting his hard charger passing in the 410 sprint feature, Stambaugh passed 24 cars in the two features.

Some of those passes, however, were by default, as three different race leaders ran into hard luck. Dan Dietrich hit the outside fence and flipped while leading as he exited turn two of lap 12. For the second straight 358 Lincoln show, one of his sons was closing at the time, and young Danny Dietrich assumed the top spot for the restart. But he clipped the spinning car of Mike Bittinger while lead on turn two of lap 19, ending his night just under two laps short of his first career Lincoln win. Then Rory Janney, celebrating his 17th birthday, pulled up lame on the backstretch after yielding the lead to Eric Stambaugh in turns one and two of the final lap.

Stambaugh held off a charging T.J. Stutts over the final lap to claim his eighth career Lincoln 358 win, followed by Stutts, Scott Geesey (who led laps two through six), points leader Chad Trout (who came from 12th starting spot), and Travis Keeney. Sixth through tenth were Billy Dietrich, Brad McClelland, Steve Clabaugh, Kevin Drury, and Judd Shepard.

Heats for the 39 "358" Sprinters were won by Danny and Dan Dietrich, Keeney and Janney. Twin consolation events were won by Shepard and McClelland.

Craig Wagaman picked up his second Lincoln of the year in the 12-lap, rain-shortened thundercar feature. Wagaman started on the pole and held off David Prunkl for the first four laps before the 8MD dropped from the field. Mike Ciezobka then picked up the chase for the next seven laps before problem sidelined him. Nat Tuckey assumed the runner-up spot, only to have rains arrive for the second time of the night after the completion of the 12th lap, bringing out the checkered for Wagaman's 18th career Lincoln win. That places him in sole possession of sixth place on the all-time thundercar win list, one win behind Gary Potts.

Credited with third was Chet McCormick, with Mike Zeigler, Sr. closing to within 30 points of his son for the Lincoln points lead with a fourth-place finish. Completing the top five was Dan Zechman.

Heats for the 24 Thundercars were won by Craig Wagaman, McCormick and Prunkl.

Lincoln's show was delayed by one hour when rain arrived between the second and third thundercar heats.

Lincoln Speedway swings back into action with a special mid-week show this Wednesday night, July 21st with the running Mid-Summer Championships for both the 410 sprints and 358 sprints. Both open-wheel divisions will go after increased purses with the 410 sprinters going after the $3,000 top prize and the 358 sprinters going after the $2,000. Time trials will be used for BOTH divisions to set the starting line-ups.

Gates will open at 5:30 PM and time trials set to start at 7:30 PM.

There will be NO racing next Saturday night, July 24th.
