RAHMER PREPS FOR ANNIVERSARY RACE WITH ANOTHER WIN
Chad Layton repeats in 358's and Ron Shultz takes second thundercar win

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 5/21/05 - Fred Rahmer said his Joe Harz Racing sprint car team was doing a little experimenting for Wednesday night's 53-lap Anniversary race at Lincoln Speedway.

However, Rahmer would not divulge just exactly what crew chief Tim Elwell and the rest of the JHR team were doing. Whatever it was, it was just another night in the office as the Salfordville driver continued his winning ways with his fifth 25-lap 410 Sprint car feature win of the season. The win moved him to within 11 wins of tying Steve Smith for the all-time career win mark in the Pigeon Hills.

While Rahmer was making his way from the 11th starting spot, some of his top contenders were dropping out of the feature event during the early laps while running near the front.

"We were a little bit tight but a lot of cars broke tonight that we didn't have to pass," Rahmer said of Jeff Shepard and Brian Leppo, who both dropped out while running in second place during the main event. "We were pretty good, but we were not where we needed to be. We were trying something different for the 53 lapper so we will see if it works."

Sam Schlosberg led lap one before giving way to Chris Knopp at the completion of lap two. Knopp led when Bobby Weaver spun in turn one collecting Lance Dewease, who was in the pits after driving from Port Royal Speedway earlier in the evening.

Shepard raced into the runner-up spot on lap four, but his Apple Motorsports sprinter went up in smoke a lap later.

Last week's winner Leppo moved into the runner-up spot on the restart and made only two laps when his sprinter went pitside when a nozzle line came loose on his sprinter.

Rahmer was up to the fourth spot on lap eight and two laps later, Rahmer moved Chad Layton back to fourth with a pass in turn two.

Greg Hodnett, who started 10th was in the runner-up spot when Rahmer took third.

Niki Young's backstretch flip on lap 12 slowed action and wiped out Knopp's two-second lead.

Rahmer was anticipating Hodnett to make a move on Knopp on the restart but it never happened. It worked to his advantage as he took the lead on lap 14.

"I thought Greg would go into one and two and do a flyer on him and I was gonna try and roll the top and drive underneath them," Rahmer stated after earning another $3,000 paycheck, his 12th overall win this season. "But Greg went to the top and I was able to sneak by him. That made all the difference because the first guy to the front was gonna win it."

Hodnett took second from Knopp on lap 22 and a lap later, Jeff Busby's spin gave the Hamilton Motorsports driver a final attempt for the win. Rahmer was never challenged over the final two circuits taking the win by one second ahead of Hodnett.

"Last year we started to do good at the Anniversary race so hopefully we can do it again this year," the winner stated. "Greg looked like he wanted to race tonight and those guys aren't going to struggle forever. Right now, we have the established team while a lot of those guys are still building."

Knopp finished third ahead of Eric Stambaugh and Jason Johnson.

Dewease returned from the early tangle for sixth over Layton, Doug Esh, Brian Montieth and Jim Siegel.

Heats for the 23 "410" sprinters were won by Schlosberg, Hodnett and Rahmer.

After winning his first career Lincoln 358 Sprint car feature last week , Harrisburg's Chad Layton returned to victory lane for a second time in the 20-lap feature.

Layton started sixth in his brother's No. 55 sprinter and raced his way into third by lap three as Jay Galloway set the early pace. Galloway made his return to Lincoln after suffering a shoulder injury a few weeks ago.

Dan Dietrich passed Galloway on lap four for the top spot with Layton moving into second two laps later. Layton and Dietrich battled for the top spot until Layton took the upper hand with 10 laps complete.

He went onto his 52nd career "358" sprint car win ahead of Dietrich, with Billy Dietrich third, defending points champion Chad Trout fourth and Steve Owings fifth.

Sixth was Cory Haas over Danny Dietrich, Alan Krimes, Jon Keller and Judd Shepard.

Heats for the 37 "358" sprinters were won by Dan Dietrich, Judd Shepard, Billy Dietrich and Galloway, with Cory Haas and Keith Prutzman winning the twin consolations.

Track points leader Ron Shultz made an exciting final lap pass on Neil Smith to secure his second 20-lap thundercar feature win of the season.

Al Cramer, Sam Gallagher and Tom Slusser all led laps before giving way to Neil Smith on the eighth lap. Smith maintained the top spot while 12th place starter Shultz moved his way to the front, taking second place on lap 18 just when a two car tangle slowed the field.

Shultz and Smith raced hard for the top spot with Shultz bringing home the win over Smith, Duane Watson, Craig Wagaman and Doug Devilbiss.

Heats for the 26 thundercars were won by Gallagher, Mike Walls and Smith.

Lincoln Speedway will be in action Wednesday night (5/25) with the special 53rd Anniversary/John Gleim Jr. Excavating Night. The 410 sprinters will go after the $5,300 top prize in the extended 53-lap event. Joining them in the special mid-week show will be the thundercars. Time trials are set to get underway at 7 PM, with gates opening at 5 PM.

Then next Saturday night, May 28th, it will be Kline's Services Night with the 410 sprint and thundercar regulars being joined by the INEX Legends. That show will get underway at 7:30 PM, with gates opening at 5:30 PM.
