Stone dominates limited late models; Slaybaugh claims emotional career first in thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/4/05 - "Man it was fast tonight."

Truer words were never spoken. The track was fast, but so was the 410 sprinter of second generation driver Jim Siegel, who broke a slump of more than a year in claiming his second career win in the 25-lap SUSCOM Night feature Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway.

Siegel, who had not finished in the top five in ten Lincoln races this year, was dominant. He gained nearly a second-a-lap over the rest of the field after each restart of the caution-filled event. He grabbed the lead from his front-row starting spot over polesitter Chris Knopp and was more than three seconds ahead of Niki Young when Young jumped the cushion and rolled over in turn three of lap six.

His lead was more than four seconds when the second caution came out for Danny Murray on lap 11. Additional cautions wiped out leads of more than three seconds on lap 15, a second on lap 16, a second on lap 17, two seconds on lap 19, and nearly three seconds on lap 23.

"It's easy starting from the front row...you're supposed to do that," said a happy Siegel in victory lane, "We've been struggling it seems like ever since we got the first (win) last year...we started off okay this year but have been struggling. We put this new car together...we knew it was going to be a fast car. We were just trying to feel it out and get a good balance with it."

An opening-lap melee on turn two involved nine cars, but Siegel was already down the backstretch. It seemed like a caution flag flew every time Siegel closed in on lapped traffic.

"It was a double-edge sword," said Siegel on the numerous cautions, "The lapped traffic was excellent tonight, they were doing a good job keeping their heads and staying out of the way...but you keep getting those yellows and you just keep thinking and you hear every little noise. I just kept thinking we had to get a fuel stop because this thing was going to run out of fuel."

Siegel's win came over a star-studded field that saw several big names in the top ten throughout the race.

"I kept looked up at the leader board," said Siegel. "Chris (Knopp) has been good, Stambaugh's been on a roll here, and then I saw Lance (Dewease) get up to third and you know he's hungry and you're just waiting for the 88 (Rahmer) to come on...I just wanted to get this over with."

Siegel pulled away on each restart, crossing 1.64 seconds ahead of Knopp, who finished second for a second straight week. Dewease advanced from 12th starting spot to finish third, with Stambaugh fourth and Greg Hodnett catching points leader Fred Rahmer for fifth on the backstretch of the final lap. Sixth through tenth were Rahmer, Brian Leppo (who came from the back after the first-lap crash), Doug Esh (also coming from the back after the lap one crash), Sam Schlosberg, and Bobby Weaver (who came from the rear after suffering a flat tire).

"We're a low budget team. Bob Folk from C.H. Folk & Sons Feeds gives us real good stuff ," Siegel added. "My folks give me everything they got...Don Ott Engines are the fastest engines around, everybody knows that...McCarthy's Marine Sales, Hoosier Tires...we got hooked on these VRP Shocks this year and it helped us and made a heck of a difference on this car and made us fast."

Heats for the 26 "410" sprinters were won by Schlosberg, Rahmer and Siegel, with Dan Shetler winning the consolation.

Thompson's Dan Stone came to Lincoln to get some track time for the August 13th World of Outlaw Late Model show, and dominated a huge field of cars which turned out for the limited late model portion of the program. Stone started third and led every lap of the 20-lap event, crossing 3.91 seconds ahead of runner-up Carl Billet, who came from 11th starting spot. Third through fifth were Bryan Bernheisel, defending thundercar champ Mike Zeigler Sr. and Mike Spangler.

Heats for the 36 limited late models were won by Pat Beard, Jake Jones, Spangler and Stone. Stone won the fourth heat in a new 8-lap track record time of two minutes 20.33 seconds, breaking the old record of two minutes 21.15 seconds set by Jeff Leiphart on June 10, 2000.

Twin consolations were won by Zeigler and Dave Sokoloski.

Second-generation thundercar racer Mike Slaybaugh picked up his first career win in there 20-lap feature. His father, Kenny Slaybaugh was the 1964 late model track champ and was racing up until last season at 69 years of age, was on hand to see his son's emotional first career win.

Slaybaugh, grabbed the lead from his outside frontrow starting spot over polesitter Greg Emlet Jr. at the drop of the green and led all 20 laps en route to the win.

But it wasn't easy as third-starting Duane Hahn stayed glued to his bumper the entire distance. He was followed just as closely by defending track champ Mike Zeigler Sr., current point leader Ron Shultz, and Nat Tuckey over the final 10 laps as they cruised the highside of the track the entire way waiting for Slaybaugh to falter.

But Slaybaugh was up to the task and took the checkered .74-seconds ahead of Hahn to become the 70th different driver to ever win a thundercar feature at Lincoln Speedway. Zeigler Sr. finished third, Ron Shultz fourth and Nat Tuckey fifth. Completing the top-10 were Sam Gallagher, Duane Watson, Neil Smith, Howard Williams and Tom Slusser Jr..

Heats for the 25 thundercars were won by Craig Wagaman, Emlet and Zeigler Sr., with Jake Markey winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, June 11th, the Pennsylvania Posse takes on the traveling All-Star Circuit of Champions. Joining the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 410 Sprinters will be the thundercar regulars. Gates will open at 5:30 PM, with time trials getting underway at 7:30 PM.
