JIM SIEGEL TOPS WELDON STERNER MEMORIAL
Curt Michael runs away with URC sprint win and Neil Smith wins first in the thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/18/05 - Two weeks ago, Jim Siegel wired the sprint car field at Lincoln Speedway to capture his second career feature win. Last week, the New Oxford racer failed to qualify for the Haulmark All Star event in the Pigeon Hills.

Saturday night, Siegel returned to his winning ways leading all but one lap of the 33-lap Weldon Sterner Memorial and left with his biggest career win. His third career win was worth $6,900 to the Scarpitta Racing/Bob Folk-owned No. 59 team.

"We were really frustrated with our performance last week and we really wanted to come back and put on a good show after we had the win but we ran short," said the 26-year-old second generation racer. "I really wanted to come back tonight and win this race because there was a lot of extra money put up by the sponsors of the Weldon Sterner race and it will look good in my bank account."

Like he did in his first 2005 win, Siegel took full advantage of his front row starting position. It proved to be the difference on a dry slick racing surface Saturday night.

After Sam Schlosberg led lap one, Siegel moved the C.H. Folk and Sons Feed, McCarthy's Marine Sales, Promotion Graphics J & J Chassis to the front on the second lap. His move would end up being the race-winning move.

Siegel led through the ninth lap when Doug Esh brought out a caution with a flat tire.

Schlosberg held off Eric Stambaugh for the runner-up spot as Siegel raced away out front.

Brian Leppo, driving an Apple Motorsports No. 69 sprinter painted like the old Sterner Cement cars spun on the 19th lap to close the field again.

Schlosberg showed his nose on the restart but Siegel managed to pull away.

Greg Hodnett and Chad Layton put on a great battle for the fifth spot over laps 21 through 26 with Hodnett finally gaining the spot.

Stambaugh's great run ended on lap 29 when his left rear tire blew.

Schlosberg and Siegel crossed side by side on the 30th lap when the race was stopped one final time on the 31st circuit when Jeff Busby flipped in the fourth turn. He was not injured.

Schlosberg raced Siegel hard over the final two circuits but Siegel crossed under the checkered flag by a car length over the Greenlane racer.

"Sam's a helluva good driver and he wanted this one as bad as I did," said the winner. "I thought I was okay but on those restarts, he showed himself on the bottom and I thought man, he's pretty quick. I just really tried to concentrate and slow myself down and try to hold him off."

Siegel is looking forward to the challenge of starting back a little further next time.

"We started from the front row again and that helps get the confidence up with the wins but in order to be real good, we need to be able to race our way through the field," Siegel stated. "We've cut down to one night a week this year because the money really isn't there and I think that hurts our program."

Schlosberg finished second and took home $2,900 with Hodnett crossing in third after starting 10th. Jason Johnson was fourth with Layton finishing fifth.

Defending champion Fred Rahmer was sixth over Niki Young, Josh Wells, Chris Knopp and Stevie Smith. Wells earned an extra $500 bonus from Van May for the Hard Charger award. He started 18th.

Heats for the 20 "410" sprinters were won by Eric Stambaugh and Brian Montieth.

Former Lincoln 410 sprint regular Curt Michael returned to Lincoln's victory lane for the first time since the 1999 season after he destroyed the field to win the 25-lap United Racing Club feature.

Michael, who retook the URC points lead started eighth wasted little time in driving the Pat and Kathy Palladino-owned BK Leasing sprinter to the front. Michael took the lead from Chris Coyle on the sixth lap and ran away from the field aboard a brand new J & J chassis just put together this week. The win was the second of the season for Michael and his 25th career URC win.

Michael's margin of victory came by a straightaway over Coyle, Jason Clauss, Josh Weller and Kramer Williamson.

Bill Brian, Jr. Finished sixth over Dave Ely, Chad Trout, Dave McGough and Mark Bittner.

Heats for the 25 URC Sprinters were won by Chris Coyle, Josh Weller and Jon Eldreth.

Neil Smith captured his first win of the year in the caution-filled 20-lap thundercar feature.

Smith started ninth in the field and moved to the front in a hurry taking the lead from Duane Hahn on lap five and then holding off 23rd starting Mike Zeigler, Sr. over the final laps for his 35th career Lincoln win.

Zeigler moved into contention on lap 10 when he entered the top five and then took the runner-up spot with 12 laps complete. Despite a few yellow flags, Smith came home the winner over Zeigler, Nat Tuckey, Craig Wagaman and Ron Shultz.

Howard Williams, Larry Neiderer, Danny Beard, Bob Stough and Jason Watson completed the top 10.

Heats for the 29 thundercars on hand were won by Mike Slaybaugh, Mike Walls and Dan Zechman, with Larry Neiderer winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, June 25th, Lincoln Speedway kicks off the Annual Pennsylvania Speedweek Series with the 6th running of the Kevin Gobrecht Memorial. The thundercars will round out the evening's racing action with time trials getting underway at 7:30 PM. Gates will open at 5:30 PM.
