RAHMER WINS CINDY ROWE PENNSYLVANIA SPEEDWEEK OPENER AT LINCOLN
Smith edges Shultz for second straight win in thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/18/05 - Lucas Wolfe's rim-riding style won lots of new fans, but Fred Rahmer sliders won the $5,000 first prize on opening night of the 15th Annual Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Pennsylvania Speedweek at Lincoln Speedway Saturday.

Wolfe set fast time and pulled pill No.0 for the inversion to start on the pole of the 30-lap "A Main." He grabbed the lead at the outset and led the first two laps before Rahmer pulled the slider in turns three and four of a third-lap restart.

Despite leading the next ten laps, Rahmer could never shake the E&G Classics Jim and Laura Allebach No.5W, and Wolfe blasted back into the lead when Rahmer clipped the inside guardrail and bobbled on turn four of lap 13. Wolfe led the next two laps before Rahmer slid back in front through turns three and four of lap 15.

"The bottom was the only place to race," said Rahmer in victory lane. "I got running so low that I hit the inside fence and went out across the track...I hit it about three or four times tonight and it almost cost me there, but I was able to get back by Lucas, or that could've been the race."

"I watched Lucas time trial," said Rahmer of the young Wolfe. "I don't think I've ever run a lap as good as he ran in time trials."

As Rahmer was leading the final 15 laps, Wolfe, Doug Esh, and Keith Kauffman kept Fast Freddie up on the wheel by putting on a show of their own.

Esh squeezed under Wolfe for second on lap 16 as the leaders entered lapped traffic. Keith Kauffman entered the picture on lap 19, and both Wolfe and Kauffman were mounting a charge on Rahmer and Esh as the third and final caution of the event came out for sixth-place Mark Smith, who slowed on the backstretch of lap 27.

Rahmer's final margin of victory was 88-hundredths of-a-second over Esh, with Wolfe and Kauffman crossing third and fourth. Todd Hestor ran a solid race to finish fifth in the Jenkins/Mertz Racing No.55. Completing the top ten were Alan Krimes, Greg Hodnett, Eric Stambaugh, Stevie Smith, and Jason Johnson.

Niki Young, who broke a rear axle in warmups, failed to complete a time trial lap, started last in his heat, and started last in the "B Main," came through the field from 24th starting spot to finish 11th.

Rahmer's 140th career win in the Pigeon Hills was his 24th career Pennsylvania Speedweek win (11 more than anyone else). The win also gave him the points lead after opening night of Pennsylvania Speedweek with 171 points. Wolfe's fast time, heat finish, and feature finish garnered 157 points. Third through fifth in Speedweek points after Lincoln were Esh (143), Kauffman (127), and Hestor (123).

Saturday's Speedweek opener was the Sixth Annual Kevin Gobrecht Memorial for the sprinters, an event which didn't go unnoticed by the winner.

"I, just like everybody else here, wish Kevin was here to wax my (butt) tonight," said Rahmer. "He probably by this point would have been doing it on a regular basis...we all miss him, and are just glad to have known him."

Sprint heats were won by Jim Siegel, Alan Cole and Todd Shaffer, with Greg Hodnett winning the B-Main. Lucas Wolfe set fast time in time trials over the 34-car field with a one-lap time of 13.343 seconds (101.177 MPH).

Chad Layton was uninjured in a spectacular flip that tore down guide wires on the backstretch catch fence during the "B Main."

Hanover's Neil Smith drove to his second straight win and 36th career Lincoln victory in the crash-marred thundercar feature. Smith held off points leader Ron Shultz by 34-hundredths of-a-second in a one-lap shootout following the 11th caution of the event for a spinning Mike Zeigler, Sr. on turns one and two of the last lap.

Zeigler was one of seven cars battling for second at the time, and Shultz went to the inside to challenge Smith over the final two sets of turns. Crossing third was Duane Hahn, who led the first 10 laps and ran second seven of the next ten laps before finally giving up the spot to Shultz for good on lap 19. Fourth and fifth were Craig Wagaman and Jake Markey.

Sixth through tenth were Duane Watson, Mike Walls, Danny Bead, Nat Tuckey, and Howard Williams.

Heats for the 29 thundercars on hand were won by Mike Walls, Duane Hahn and Jim Martz Jr., with Tom Slusser Jr. winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, July 2nd, it will be CENTRAL MARYLAND POOLS NIGHT at Lincoln Speedway with the 358 Sprints headlining the evening's racing activities as the 410 sprinters will have the night off at the Pigeon Hills oval to race in PA Speedweek activities elsewhere.

The 305 Sprints and Thundercars will round out the evening's racing activities, capped-off with a spectacular Fireworks display to celebrate the special Fourth of July holiday weekend. Racing activities will get underway at 7:30 PM, with gates opening at 5:30 PM.
