CIVIL WAR SPRINT SERIES CONCLUDES SATURDAY AT MARYSVILLE Crockett leads series standings with impressive 63-point advantage over Shane Scott

MARYSVILLE (10-17-98) - The California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series will wrap up the 1998 series campaign this Saturday, October 17 with the final event at Twin Cities Speedway in Marysville. This event will be the 13th on the Civil War campaign and more than 40 drivers are expected to meet on the 1/4 mile oval located in the heart of California's farming community.

The California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series (CSCCWRS) is a traveling sanction body dedicated to winged Pacific "360" Sprint Cars. In 1998 the series campaign consisted of 13 events at four different tracks spanning the sierra foothills to the California coastal range. For each event they have competed in, Civil War competitors have earning cash winnings as well as championship points towards the coveted Civil War championship.

During the 1998 run of this rapidly growing, competitive race series, a total of 116 different drivers have competed and earned points in the Civil War campaign. Out of those different drivers 31 have scored heat race victories, eight different drivers have posted fast time and nine different drivers have scored feature event wins. In the 12 races that have taken place thus far, a total of 51 drivers have scored top ten finishes in feature event competition and a total of 30 drivers have posted finishes in the top five.

Entering the final event, Roger Crockett of Rio Linda maintains a healthy 63-point lead over Chico resident Shane Scott. In one night of competition, a driver can earn as many as 66-points in Civil War competition , this total arising if a competitor should clock fast time and win the feature event. The only feasible possibilities that Shane Scott could catch Crockett in the final segment of the series would be if he posted quick time and finished third or better in the feature event or clocked the second fastest time of the evening and won the feature, in this event the best Scott could do is tie the longtime series leader. In the Civil War Series bonus points are awarded for the top three qualifiers with fast time earning six points, second fast earning four points and third earning two points.

Throughout the 1998 campaign, Crockett has used qualifying and consistent top ten finishes as his ticket to the top of the ranks. Overall Crockett has posted quick laps on a total of four occasions. he has finished in the top ten a total of 11 times, in the top five on seven occasions and has one feature win to his name which took place at Placerville Speedway.

Although he ranks second in the point standings, Scott continues to be the winningest driver of the series with a total of three feature event wins with one each at Chico, Marsyville and Petaluma. Additionally, Scott has turned quick time on one occasion in the season, has posted two heat race victories, finished in the top ten nine different times and posted six top five finishes. A pair of hard luck evenings for Scott have prevented the multi-time Silver Dollar Speedway Champion from closing in on Crockett's dominant lead.

After winning the 12th round of competition two weeks ago at Placerville Speedway, David Robinson Jr. of Sacramento ranks third in the series standings. Robinson has logged five top ten finishes with four of them in the top five and trails Scott by 61-points. Roseville's Chad Riolo ranks fourth overall with 29-points separating he and Robinson. Riolo has posted six top ten finishes with three of those accomplishments being in the top five. Jeff Halleib of Grass Valley rounds out the top five in the point standings with 16-points separating him from Riolo. Jeff Young, Billy Wallace, Mark Hall, Scooter Lambert and Kyle Schild round out the top ten in the series point standings in that order.

Action is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday with time trials followed by racing at 7. Tickets will go on sale when the grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. Adult tickets will be $12, juniors and seniors $7, children $3 and those under six will be admitted for free.
