KAEDING CONQUERS P-VILLE HIGH BANKS IN SPEEDWEEK FEATURE

Placerville, CA (June 29) . . . Northern Auto Racing Club championship point leader Brent Kaeding nailed down an impressive 30-lap flag-to-flag charge at Placerville Speedway, to claim round two of NARC-Budweiser Silver Legacy Speedweek ‘98.

Kaeding outgunned polesitter Paul McMahan on the original start and survived five caution flags and a few brushes with wayward lapped traffic to secure his fourth win of the season. His winning efforts came aboard Al Peterson's potent Al's Roofing Supply/McCreary Tire-backed Shaver-Maxim.

"This victory is dedicated to (crew chief) Billy Albini and my pit crew," explained Kaeding in victory lane. "This made up for me losing the race last night with a perfect race car."

The ten-time NARC champion established a comfortable lead on the tight quarter-mile oval, chased by Paul McMahan, Jason Meyers, and Australian Peter Murphy. The running order remained constant for the first 16 laps until the leader almost got knocked out by a slower car.

While attempting to negotiate his way through traffic, the car driven by David Robinson jumped the backstretch wall and almost landed on Kaeding's mount. Robinson's bicycling car missed Kaeding's by inches.

The only other serious challenge Kaeding received was from McMahan. Steering John Sullivan's Mountain Impact/U.S. Rental JB, McMahan made a run on the leader on a lap 27 restart. McMahan dove low under Kaeding as the duo raced through the third and fourth corners, but the leader slammed the door on the straightaway to score his 134th career NARC win.

"I think I gave Brent a wake-up call," stated McMahan afterwards. "I got a good jump on him, but spun my tires and it was all over."

The battle for third during the final five laps was worth the price of admission. Meyers, Randy Tiner, and Shane Scott dueled wheel to wheel, swapping positions on a corner by corner basis. Tiner overhauled Meyers with three laps remaining, only to watch Scott blow past both drivers a lap later. Scott, driving the Danielson Company JB, earned the podium finish at the checkered. Tiner spun out on the backchute.

Seventeen-year-old fast qualifier Roger Crockett managed to slip past Meyers to steal fourth in Roger Henderson's GT Parts sprinter on the white flag lap. Meyers rounded out the top five in the Don Carter Manufacturing J & J.

The second five included 19th starter Randy Hannagan, Murphy, Bobby McMahan, Steve Kent, and Jason Statler.

Hannagan, who held the point lead entering the event, timed in a disappointing 26th fast. However, his passing display was worth the River City Copy & Graphics hardcharger award. Hannagan now trails Kaeding by a 199-183 margin.

Crockett's time of 11.243 seconds was the best among the 37 qualifiers. Unfortunately, for the second consecutive night, the fast qualifier failed to transfer through his heat race. Crockett rebounded with a photo-finish over Tiner in the 12-lap semi.

Heat race were posted by Brent and Bud Kaeding, rookie David Fowler, and Jimmy Sills. Ryan Riley was uninjured in a wild flip in the third heat. RACE RESULTS:
