NEMA, the NorthEast Midget Association held its pre-season preview and technical inspection at Seekonk (MA) Speedway on Saturday April 21. ABout 18 cars were on hand, an encouraging sign for ample starting fields in 1996.
The NEMA circuit is mostly 1/4 to 1/3 mile paved tracks, so while there are a few Gaerte and Fontana powered cars, quite a few VWs are also competing. There are also some unusual midget powerplant configurations, including Oldsmobile's Quad 4, a home-built pushrod V4, Ford Pinto SOHC, and a Mazda rotary among others.
NEMA's 1996 schedule: May 4 Star Speedway Epping NH May 25 Seekonk Speedway Seekonk MA June 15 Star Speedway June 22 Jennerstown Speedway Jennerstown PA - co-sanction with ARDC July 13 Riverside Park Agawam MA July 20 Oswego Speedway Oswego NY- co-sanction with ARDC July 27 Riverside Speedway Groveton NH August 4 Canaan USA Speedway Canaan NH August 17 Seekonk Speedway August 23 Monadnock Speedway Winchester NH Sept 2 Flemington Speedway Flemington NJ - co-sanction with ARDC Sept 21 Star Speedway Oct 12 & 13 Seekonk Speedway Oct 19 & 20 Thompson Speedway, Thompson CT
If you're a midget fan you'll also want to get a copy of NEMA's 1995 yearbook and the 1996 commemorative t-shirt, which has a winged midget on the front and the names of NEMA champions dating back to the 1950s on the back. For 1996 NEMA is also starting a booster club, which will include a monthly newsletter.
