NSCA: Nebraska Sprint Car race report 2000-04-21

DROUD SLAMS FAIR SPRINTERS

LINCOLN, NE-April 21, 2000- Don Droud, Jr. kicked off the 2000 season for the Nebraska Beef Producers/Nebraska Sprint Car Association, by scoring a Grand Slam Friday night, before a packed house at Nebraska State Fair Park Raceway in Lincoln. Droud ran away with his heat race, the trophy dash and the 25 A Feature for 360 sprints. Droud and Jason Danley brought the field of 20 down to the green flag, with Droud jumping to an immediate lead. Bruce Divis, from his outside row two slot, jumped into second and started putting pressure on Don when, on lap four, Ed Opp slammed the front stretch wall and cartwheeled to a stop. Other than a slightly bruised knee, Opp was OK, but his car was damaged to badly to continue. On the restart, Divis drove around the outside of Droud, only to have the yellow come out and cancel the move. The next start saw Droud protect the high side and take a comfortable lead. Divis began to fade as the race hit the tenth lap, giving up second to Jake Peters, then two laps later, Todd Frisbie drove into third. Peters began to slowly reel in the leader as they encountered lapped traffic. Jake pulled even coming off turn two on lap 19, but Droud got the better bite down the backstretch, and used slower cars to keep the point. Coming around for the white flag on lap 24, Divis and Jeff Griffis tangled while fighting for 4th place, with Divis coming to a stop at the flagstand with front end damage. this made for a two-lap shootout, with Droud having the advantage of a lapped car between himself and Peters. On the green, don pulled away to an easy victory, with Peters, Frisbie, Brian Schnee and Danley filling in the top five. Droud also won his NAPA Heat and the Durst Motorplex Trophy Dash to complete the Grand Slam. Other NAPA Heat winners were, Danley, Peters, and Divis with Dean Chadd winning the B Feature. Also scoring a Grand Slam was Derek Fralin in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. Fralin won his heat, the dash and 15 lap feature over, Scott Weims, James Griffith and Justin Fritsen. Bryan Langdale won the other IMCA Hobby Stock heat race.
