Racers Show American Colors at Path Valley Friday

Spring Run, PA_ Rodney Glass of Ft. Loudon won his sixth 270cc Sprint feature of the season while Randy Brookens of Waynesboro won the 270cc mechanics' race and his brother Jimmy Brookens of Fayetteville won the Path Valley season championship in the final season points race, according to unofficial points calculations.

Glass started eighth and took the lead on the second lap after three tries to get the race underway. Heat winners were Doug Gray, Glass and Brandon Grandstaff, and Randy Brookens drove Gray's #28D in the mechanic's race. The top five finishers were Glass, Grandstaff, Jeff Furlong, Dave Shirk and Jim Young.

This is only the second track championship paraplegic Jim Brookens has won because he usually races at a variety of different tracks. 114 teams raced in defiance of foreign terrorists. Friday night races continue through Sept. 28.

Next Friday at the Path Valley Speedway Park features special powder puff races for amateur lady drivers in the stock car divisions and the season's final race for the 305 PA Sprints. Karts and Quads race next Saturday afternoon and the 125 Sprints, 250 Sportsman Sprints, 270 Sprints and 600 Sprints race next Saturday evening. A PDKA rain make-up is tentatively scheduled next Sunday, Sept. 23.

The final Friday night race Sept. 28 includes all five regular divisions along with the Dwarf Cars and the Cyclones. The $1000 to win 4-Cylinder Shoot Out is Sept. 29 with gates open at 9 a.m. The Second Annual Legends Day and Community Flea Market is Oct. 6 and the final race is the AMA Motorcycle Show on Oct. 13.

Racers and fans at the Path Valley Speedway Park contributed $229 Friday night for New York City Red Cross disaster relief, and the track matched the full amount for a total $460. Announcer Bob Johnson, a military veteran himself, conducted a memorial service and candle lighting at 7 p.m. followed by the National Anthem to a flag at half staff, and many of the racecars bore American flags as they raced in defiance of foreign terrorists.

'Racin' Jason' Covert of Orbisonia and Harrisburg won in the guest 358 limited late model show after leader Tim Fedder overtook the rear of the field and went into the infield on the backstretch on lap 13. Fedder and Sterling Kinard won the heats and the front five finishers were Jason Covert, Kirk Ryan, Bob Dunn, Scott Richwine, and Tim Smith.

Butch Brough of Newville led all the way for his sixth win of the season in the Legends Cars. Only two cautions regrouped the field and each time Brough held off challenges from Donnie Potts.

In the support divisions, Shippensburg native Jeremy Ott of Zellinger raced the #28 four-cylinder thunder car he recently purchased for his first Path Valley win and the second of his career. Then he successfully withstood a protest technical inspection engine teardown to confirm his win.

Mark Whitsel of Cassville passed Denny Snyder on lap five and then used lapped cars and cautions to stay ahead of Kirk Knable for his fourth win of the season in the modified mini stock feature. Steve Bailor of East Waterford passed Randy Patterson for the V-8 Street Stock lead on lap seven and roared to his third win.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike off Route 75.
