Path Valley Outraces Bad Weather for Fitz, Fisher and Good Wins

Spring Run, PA_ The 600 Sprint feature with two laps to go looked like a walk away win for Bullrider's Jim Fitz of Crystal Springs Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.

Then sailing into turn three Fitz shed a wheel in lap 19 and in a dramatic irony his brother Richie Fitz took over the lead and nailed down the second win of the season for their Bullrider Chassis team. Jim Fitz took the lead at the start and Richie Fitz moved into second after the first caution in lap 10. Both brothers had the challenge of past repeat champion Donnie Hendershot to contend with. The front five at the finish were Richie Fitz, Donnie Hendershot, Jim Brookens, Aaron Eichelberger, and Mark Hendershot, and the heat winners were Brookens, Hendershot and Hendershot.

Racing suffered from a one hour rain delay that held up the final feature finish until almost 11:30, but the benefit was an unusually soft and tacky track for some of the fastest racing of the season, according to senior race director John Winsett. "Our track crew did a great job tonight," he said, "and the drivers had the fewest caution flags we've seen this season."

The Central PA Legends provided equal thrills as Nathan Fisher of Beaver Springs took the lead and win from Lawrence Garrison and Rick Potts with two to go amid lapped car traffic.

Valvoline Cup National Micro Sprint Champion Sean Good of Middleburg outran Jim Callahan and Tony Jackson for the 270 Sprints win with a pass around Callahan to the outside of turn one on lap 17 amid lapped traffic. Jerry Bard in the Mini Stocks, Randy Patterson in the V-8 Street Stocks, and Lyle Barnes in the 4-Cylinder Thunder Cars all repeated stock car wins.

Next Friday night, April 30, the PA 305 Sprints and the Dwarf Cars take the place of the Legends and V-8 Street Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m. with warm-ups about 6:30.

Elite Chassis dominated the 270 Sprints just as Bullrider Chassis had the 600 Sprints as teammates Jim Callahan and Sean Good held off first Colby Womer and then Chad Myers and Tony Jackson to take another Good win for East Coast Motorsports. The front five were Good, Callahan, Jackson, Myers and Jim Young. A.J. Bast, Jackson and Womer won the heats.

In the Legends, Fisher outmaneuvered Rick Potts around a lapped car and then stayed ahead of both Potts and Lawrence Garrison in a thriller all three had led at times. Fisher, Garrison, Potts, James Black and Bob Murray were the front five finishers and Potts, Fisher and Randy Kissinger were the heat winners.

All three stock car features built on the excitement of racing after rain when no other nearby tracks could with Lyle Barnes passing Tony Weller on the inside of turn two after 13 laps for the 4-Cylinder Thunder Car win, the second for Barnes. Into lapped car traffic shortly, Barnes used Rookie Jeff Christy's 22 to hold off Wes Scofield, Weller, John Rasp and Melvin Bigler, the front five finishers. Terry Smith and Rick Rosenberry won the heats.

Randy Patterson took the lead on a lap six restart after early leader Wayne Hawbaker suffered a flat, and Patterson sailed to the V-8 Street Stock win followed by Kevin Keefer, Alex Boozie and Hawbaker.

Jerry Bard had to hold off both Ricky Harper and Kyle Wiser for the Mini Stock win, Bard's second. Bard edged past Harper in close clean wheel to wheel action through laps five, six and into lap seven. "Once I got past Harper I could really run on the smooth track," he said, "but I was just lucky with that tire that went flat in the winner's circle." The front five were Bard, Harper, Wiser, Kevin Thomas and Gary Dehart, and Thomas won the single heat race.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
