Howland Takes ASCS Patriot Win in Final Corner at Canandaigua

CANANDAIGUA, NY (June 13, 2009) - With two championships and ten career wins, to Bryan Howland any track he hasn't won at he isn't very strong at. Canandaigua has always been on that list and while he might have had the strongest car on Saturday he made the right move on the final corner to sling around Bobby Breen to capture his first win of 2009.

Howland, 22, of Auburn, NY, picked up his first Lucas Oil ASCS Patriot win since August of 2008 with a daring last-lap, last-corner maneuver around the always-tough Bobby Breen No. 9 to lead just the final 300 feet of the 25-lap A-Main.

"Flyin' Bryan" began closing on the Breen in the waning laps but was likely to run out of time. On the final circuit, though, Bobby went to the bottom to attempt to move around Judi Bates and found the line blocked, allowing Howland to rim ride to the lead.

"Bobby was really good on the top all night long, there was no way I was going to get around him if he stayed up there," noted a humble Howland after the race. "I let my tires cool down after the red flag on lap 16 and started running him down but if it wasn't for the lapped car I wouldn't have won this race."

Despite being winless at "The Land of Legends", Howland had a streak of five-straight top-5 finishes at the fast and flat 0x00bd-mile.JPerhaps the little extra boost he needed was the change in track conditions for the night.

Typically a slick speedway, humid and overcast conditions, combined with a few light sprinkles in the afternoon, kept the track very fast throughout the night and forced drivers to be perfect to move forward.

Jessica Zemken drew the pole position for the 25-lap A-Verdi King of CNY A-Main, with Bobby Breen to her outside. Breen took the initial advantage and would set sail on the field, lapping 10 cars before the first caution on lap 16 for a slowing Lance Yonge. While the No. 9 was out front, Howland, Zemken and Jared Zimbardi put on a thrilling show for second.

Each driver took the second spot on multiple occasions, with Zemken having the spot when the field was slowed on lap 16. On the restart, Chuck Hebing would flip his potent No. 45 when trying to avoid the spinning Brad Knab. "Cobra" had moved from 16th to sixth and was poised to get to the lead pack but would end up off of turn one. When he was cleared the green flag would wave and the craziness would ensue for nine quick laps.

Breen checked out so quickly that he caught the tail end of the field with three laps left to go. He had a little trouble getting around Knab with two to go, allowing Howland to close to within a second. Howland had already moved his Filtrec Corporation No. 51 back around Zemken and Zimbardi on the laps immediately following the restart and wasn't ready to slow down. He was clearly fast on the top of the track, which is where Breen always lurks, so when the top opened up for Bryan, it was all he could hope for.

To add to the intensity of the moment, just as Howland was completing the pass for the lead and moving around the lapped car driven by Judi Bates, Jeff Cook was crashing in turn two which would cause a caution. The caution was not called until after Howland moved underneath Craig Palmeri's Double Checkered Flags, which meant the race was complete and the No. 51 had his 10th Career Patriot Win.

With the odd scenario unfolding on the final circuit, Howland and the rest of the pack drove around under caution speed until it was confirmed that the race had indeed been finished appropriately, making Bryan the fifth different winner in six Lucas Oil ASCS Patriot Events in 2009.

Bobby Breen was understandably disappointed with losing the lead in the final corner. He said after the event he just didn't know what line would be open and just guessed wrong. Breen does hold on to the A-Verdi King of Central New York Point Lead.

Howland was not the only driver making the cushion work in turn three and four on the final lap. Jared Zimbardi drove around Jessica Zemken coming to the finish to claim third in the "Battle of the JZ's."JThis was the second time this year that pair swapped spots on the final lap.

One final pair of positions changed in the final 0x00bd-mile as Jason Barney charged around Blake Breen to round out the top-five. Barney had to come through the B-Main to qualify for the feature and moved consistently towards the front, ultimately running out of time.

Tim Kelly was a solid seventh after winning National Parts Peddler Heat No. 2. Don Adamczyk won the first heat and finished in eighth while Gordy Button picked up the third qualifier and was the final car on the lead lap in ninth. Judi Bates rounded out the top-10 in her first trip to Canandaigua.

A record 35 cars packed the pit area on what was supposed to be a total washout. The skies cleared as the night went along; with the sun ultimately showing it's head during the final heat race.

Mike Stelter won the other B-Main while Michael Parent won the Four Laps of Fame held in Memory of Doug Mattison. Doug was a Canandaigua regular in modifieds but had a life-long passion for sprints and would have been there on Saturday had he not lost his battle with cancer two months earlier. He would have liked the race held in his honor with a Schnee Chassis winning it and his buddies Lance Yonge and Bubby Kerrick also in the six-car field.

Two red flags were shown on the night. The first was for Dan Kaszubinski on the opening lap of the first lap when he hopped the right rear of Jeff Frasier and barrel rolled over the wall in turn one. Kaz would make the necessary adjustments and qualify for the A-Main.

The other flip was by Chuck Hebing in the feature. Hebing had a camera on-board for the upcoming Hot Wings TV episode, which was not harmed and came out with good footage, but at a high cost. This race will be available on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet Channels throughout New York starting just after the 4th of July.J
